Interactions Among Organisms (Ecology)

When multiple species or individuals strive for the same limited resource, such as food, water, or territory, they engage in competition. Predatory interactions involve one organism hunting and eating another, whereas symbiotic relationships involve close, long-term interactions between different species.

A predatory interaction occurs when one organism (the predator) hunts, kills, and eats another organism (the prey) for food. In this scenario, the tiger is the predator and the warthog is the prey.

In this mutualistic relationship, the butterfly benefits by obtaining nectar, which serves as a vital food source. In return, the flower benefits because the butterfly transfers pollen from one flower to another, aiding in plant reproduction.

Since living space is a limited resource, multiple lions competing for the same territory represents a competitive interaction. This is an example of intraspecific competition, where members of the same species compete for resources.

Parasitism is a symbiotic relationship where one organism (the parasite) benefits at the expense of another organism (the host). Fleas benefit by feeding on the mammal's blood and finding shelter, while the mammal is harmed by itching, irritation, or potential diseases.
