Mughal Empire

Urdu developed during the Mughal era, originating as a 'soldier's language' (the word Urdu itself comes from a Turkish word meaning 'army' or 'camp') in the military camps, blending Persian, Arabic, and local Prakrit dialects. Today, it is the national and official language of Pakistan.

The term 'Mughal' is a corruption of the Persian word for 'Mongol,' reflecting the dynasty's ancestral roots tracing back to Genghis Khan and Timur.

Under Islamic law in historical empires like the Mughals, the 'jizya' was a per capita yearly tax levied on non-Muslim subjects (known as dhimmi) residing in an Islamic state.

Aurangzeb was a devout and orthodox Muslim ruler who reversed many of the religiously tolerant policies of his predecessors, reinstating the jizya tax and destroying Hindu temples, which led to widespread persecution of religious minorities.

Nur Jahan was the twentieth wife of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Due to Jahangir's battles with addiction and ill health, she wielded immense political power and was the de facto ruler of the empire.

The invasion of Timur in 1398 severely crippled the Tughlaq dynasty and shattered the political stability of the Delhi Sultanate, eventually leading to its fragmentation. While later rulers like Babur ended the Sultanate entirely, Timur's invasion broke it apart first.

Babur founded the Mughal Empire in 1526 after defeating Ibrahim Lodi, the last ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, at the First Battle of Panipat. Akbar, Aurangzeb, and Shah Jahan were later rulers who expanded and consolidated the empire.
