Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one that remains standing today. Built as a tomb for the Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu, it has survived for over 4,500 years.

The Great Pyramid of Giza originally stood at approximately 146.6 meters (481 feet) tall, making it the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. This height easily surpassed the other ancient wonders, such as the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was around 100 to 130 meters tall.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria, built on the island of Pharos in Egypt, was severely damaged by a series of major earthquakes between 956 and 1323 AD. By the late 14th century, the seismic activity had reduced the structure to ruins, and its remaining stones were later used to build a medieval citadel.

The Colossus of Rhodes was a massive bronze statue erected in 280 BC to depict Helios, the Greek god of the Sun. It was built to celebrate the island's successful defense against a year-long siege by Demetrius Poliorcetes.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was built as a tomb for Mausolus, a ruler of Caria (a satrapy of the Persian Empire). The word 'mausoleum' itself is derived from his name.
