Mick Fanning famously survived a shark attack during the J-Bay Open finals in South Africa in 2015. He escaped unharmed by punching the shark in the back to ward it off, which became a viral sensation worldwide.

Kelly Slater is widely regarded as the greatest professional surfer of all time, having won the World Surf League Championship a record 11 times. Layne Beachley won 7 women's world titles, while Mark Richards won 4.

Surfing made its official debut as an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (which were held in 2021 due to the pandemic). This marked the first time surfers competed for Olympic medals.

In June 2015, a group of 66 surfers in Huntington Beach, California, successfully rode a giant 42-foot surfboard together for 12 seconds, setting a Guinness World Record. This shattered the previous record of 47 surfers.

'Hanging Five' is a classic longboarding maneuver where the surfer rides at the front of the board and curls the toes of one foot over the nose. If they manage to get both feet over the nose, it is called 'Hanging Ten.'

In board sports like surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding, riding with the right foot forward is known as a 'goofy stance.' Conversely, riding with the left foot forward is called a 'regular stance.'

The Banzai Pipeline is a world-famous surf reef break located off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. It is renowned for its massive, hollow waves that break over a shallow reef.

Surfing originated in ancient Polynesia, particularly in Hawaii, where it was a central part of their culture and religion, known as 'he'e nalu' (wave sliding). European explorers first documented the practice when they visited the Pacific islands in the late 18th century.
