The Science of Winter

Feeding on insects and berries is not a winter adaptation because these food sources are scarce or unavailable during winter. Thickening fur, growing blubber, and changing color to white are all classic adaptations to survive cold temperatures and snowy environments.

Most squirrels do not change their fur color to white in the winter, retaining their grey, red, or brown coats. In contrast, the snowy hare, arctic fox, and short-tailed weasel (ermine) all undergo seasonal molts to white to blend in with the snow.

Hibernation is a state of minimal activity and metabolic depression undergone by some animals during winter. Migration involves moving to a different region, while camouflage and adaptation are broader survival strategies.
