At its peak in the early 20th century, the British Empire was the largest empire in history, covering about a quarter of the world's land area and population. While the Mongol Empire was the largest contiguous land empire, the British Empire surpassed it in total global span. The Roman and Ottoman empires were highly influential but much smaller in geographic size.
