British Empire

At its peak in the early 20th century, the British Empire was the largest empire in history, covering about a quarter of the world's land area and population. While the Mongol Empire was the largest contiguous land empire, the British Empire surpassed it in total global span. The Roman and Ottoman empires were highly influential but much smaller in geographic size.

Virginia was the first of the thirteen colonies, established with the founding of Jamestown in 1607. Other colonies like Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire were founded later in the 17th century. Note that the option contains a minor typographical spelling error ('Vriginia').

A sepoy was an Indian soldier recruited to serve in the army of the British East India Company, and later the British Raj. These soldiers played a pivotal role in maintaining British control, but also led the famous Rebellion of 1857. They were not lower-class rebels or high-ranking British officials.

Great Britain and France were the primary European rivals competing for territory and influence in North America during the colonial era. The transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China in 1997 is widely regarded by historians as marking the end of the British Empire. While Britain still retains a few small overseas territories, Hong Kong was its last major colonial possession.

The Indian Civil Service (ICS) was established as the elite administrative arm of the British Raj in India. Although it was theoretically open to Indians through competitive examinations, the exams were held in London and highly restricted, making actual Indian participation very difficult for many decades.

The period of direct British Crown rule over the Indian subcontinent from 1858 to 1947 is commonly referred to as the British Raj. The term 'Raj' is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning 'rule' or 'king'.

The American Revolutionary War took place between 1775 and 1783. The conflict concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, in which Great Britain officially recognized the independence of the United States.

The phrase 'the empire on which the sun never sets' was used because the British Empire was so geographically vast that it spanned every time zone. Consequently, there was always at least one British territory experiencing daylight at any given moment.

Britain's colonial expansion began in earnest during the late 16th century under Queen Elizabeth I, with early attempts to establish settlements in North America and the chartering of trade monopolies like the East India Company. This period laid the groundwork for what would become the British Empire.
