However, communism did not become a significant political movement or challenge in China until the founding of the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. Therefore, the influence of communism is not a 19th-century challenge.

The British faced a severe trade imbalance with China because Western goods were not highly sought after by the Chinese public, while British demand for Chinese tea, silk, and porcelain was immense. To stop the drain of silver used to pay for these goods, the British turned to smuggling Indian-grown opium into China. This created a highly profitable commodity that balanced the trade deficit.

By 1914, major imperial powers like Britain, France, and Japan had successfully established territorial concessions and spheres of influence within China. Italy attempted to secure a lease at Sanmen Bay in 1899, but the Qing government refused the demand, making Italy the only major European power that failed to secure a concession.

Panama was originally a province of Colombia. When the Colombian Senate rejected the treaty allowing the United States to build a canal across the isthmus, the US supported Panamanian rebels in declaring independence. Consequently, Colombia lost control of the region, and the newly independent nation of Panama signed the canal treaty with the US.

Following its victory in the Spanish-American War of 1898, the United States acquired Puerto Rico as a territory and established a military occupation and subsequent protectorate status over Cuba. Jamaica remained a British colony, and Mexico was not involved in the territorial transfers of the war.

Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman governor of Egypt, launched an ambitious state-directed program to modernize Egypt's military, administration, and economy along Western lines. Despite initial successes, his industrialization efforts ultimately fell short due to financial strain and European diplomatic and military intervention. Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1808 weakened the Spanish monarchy's control over its American colonies. This power vacuum allowed local elites to form juntas and initiate self-governance, ultimately leading to the Latin American wars of independence.

Haiti declared its independence from France in 1804 following a successful slave revolt led by Toussaint Louverture and others. This made Haiti the second independent nation in the Americas, following the United States in 1776.

Creole elites feared that a full-scale revolution would mobilize the lower classes, including slaves and indigenous populations, leading to social upheaval similar to the Haitian Revolution. Argentina (1816), Mexico (1821), and Brazil (1822) all successfully gained independence from European powers during the early 19th century. In contrast, nations like India (1947) and Ghana (1957) did not achieve independence until the mid-20th century.

Russia escaped the widespread revolutionary upheavals of 1848 due to its highly repressive autocratic regime under Tsar Nicholas I, which successfully prevented any major domestic uprisings. In contrast, Germany, Austria, and Hungary all experienced significant revolutionary turmoil during this period.

Nineteenth-century classical liberalism was defined by its support for individual liberty, constitutional government, and laissez-faire economic policies. In contrast, conservatism sought to preserve traditional institutions, while socialism advocated for collective ownership.

By the late 1800s, absolute monarchy was rapidly declining or non-existent in Western and Central Europe as constitutional systems took hold. Meanwhile, modern political forces like feminism, socialism, and social democracy were actively rising and gaining significant influence.

By 1914, the United States had undergone rapid industrialization, surpassing Great Britain and Germany to become the world's leading industrial power. This economic growth was fueled by abundant natural resources, a growing labor force, and technological innovation.

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain during the late 18th century due to its unique combination of resources, capital, and labor. It then spread to continental Europe (such as Belgium and Germany) and subsequently to the United States, which rapidly industrialized in the 19th century.

The French Revolution began with the formation of the National Assembly in 1789, followed by the radical Reign of Terror (1793-1794). After the fall of Robespierre, the moderate Directory ruled from 1795 until Napoleon Bonaparte seized power in 1799.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, adopted in 1789, is the quintessential document of the French Revolution that codified Enlightenment ideals such as natural rights, liberty, and equality. The Declaration of Independence is an American document, and the Social Contract is a philosophical treatise by Rousseau.

The British did not dismantle the caste system, and sports like cricket were cultural adoptions rather than formal social reforms.

By 1800, Britain used India primarily as a source of raw materials and a market for its own manufactured goods, rather than building factories there. Manufacturing was kept concentrated in Britain to protect domestic industries and maintain economic dominance. India's strategic ports and its role as a consumer market were indeed vital to the British Empire.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States, Germany, France, and Belgium rapidly industrialized and competed with Britain for global markets and colonial territories. Nations like China and Brazil were not major industrial competitors to Britain during this era of imperial expansion. This rivalry eventually challenged Britain's long-standing global supremacy.
