The Civil War Era: Reconstruction

While Reconstruction succeeded in temporarily protecting some civil rights and reuniting the nation, it is widely considered mostly unsuccessful because it failed to secure long-term racial equality, land redistribution, or protection for freed people. This failure allowed for the rise of Jim Crow laws and disenfranchisement in the South.

Black codes in many Southern states restricted African Americans from owning or renting land to force them into labor contracts, particularly sharecropping. While other restrictions existed, completely banning them from buying any material goods or practicing faith were not standard provisions of these codes.

The Ku Klux Klan used violence, intimidation, and terror to prevent African Americans and white Republicans from voting, thereby restoring white Democratic control in the South. They did not rely on peaceful political speeches or newspapers to achieve their goals.

The Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in 1870, prohibited the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude. The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery, and the Fourteenth Amendment granted citizenship and equal protection.

The Thirteenth Amendment, ratified in 1865, officially abolished slavery and involuntary servitude throughout the United States, except as a punishment for a crime. This was the first of the three Reconstruction Amendments.

President Andrew Johnson preferred the term "Restoration" rather than "Reconstruction" because he believed the Southern states had never legally left the Union. His plan aimed to quickly restore the Southern states to their proper constitutional places with minimal changes.

The Wade-Davis Bill of 1864 was proposed by Radical Republicans who felt Lincoln's Ten Percent Plan was too lenient. It required a majority of white male citizens in a Southern state to take an "ironclad oath" of allegiance before the state could be readmitted, making it much harsher than Lincoln's plan.

Radical Republicans in Congress actually thought Abraham Lincoln's Ten Percent Plan was far too lenient on the South, not too harsh. They wanted stricter requirements for readmission and stronger protections for freed slaves, which is why they proposed the harsher Wade-Davis Bill.

Under Lincoln's Ten Percent Plan, Southern states seeking readmission to the Union had to draft new state constitutions that officially banned slavery. This requirement aligned with the Union's wartime goal of emancipation. Other options, such as accepting slavery or agreeing to wage war, contradict the fundamental terms of Reconstruction.

President Abraham Lincoln proposed the Ten Percent Plan in 1863 as a lenient way to reintegrate the Confederate states back into the Union. It specified that a southern state could be readmitted once 10 percent of its voters from the 1860 election swore an oath of allegiance to the Union. The other options are fictional or unrelated historical agreements.
