Atoms and Electric Charge

Coulomb's Law states that the electric force between two charges is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. As distance decreases, the force (and the effective interaction) increases.

According to Coulomb's Law, the magnitude of the electric force is directly proportional to the product of the charges. Therefore, a greater charge results in a greater force.

Opposite charges attract each other (positive to negative). Like charges (positive-positive or negative-negative) repel each other.

Like charges repel each other. Since both objects have a positive charge, they will exert a repulsive force on one another.

The force exerted between two charged objects is defined as the electric force.

An atom that gains or loses electrons becomes an ion. An ion is an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
