The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, established in 1982, is a national park situated around the peak of Nanda Devi in the state of Uttaranchal.

The IUCN Red List, 2004, documents the extinction of 784 species including 338 vertebrates. 359 invertebrates and 87 plants in the last 500 years.

Biosphere reserves are areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems promoting solutions to restore the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use. The plan is to promote management, research and education in ecosystem conservation. This includes the 'sustainable use of natural resources'.

Of these 1939 are listed as critically endangered. In India, 44 plant species are considered as critically endangered, 113 are endangered and 87 vulnerable. Amongst animals, 18 are critically endangered, 54 endangered and 143 vulnerable.
