Davangere is called as Manchester of Karnataka. It is called so due to its numerous cotton mills, many of which were of national and international repute. Availability of cotton led to the establishment of many cotton mills in the city. 

The Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Plant is located in Torangal, Ballari district, and was established in 2001.

The Mysore Iron and Steel Limited (MISL), now Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant, was the first iron and steel industry in Karnataka, established in Bhadravathi.

The agro-based industry includes industries related to textiles, sugar, paper and vegetable oil. These industries use agricultural products as their raw materials.

The Shivanasamudra hydro-electric power project, established in 1902, was the first of its kind in Asia and spurred industrial growth in Karnataka.

Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL), formerly known as the Mysore Iron and Steel Industries Limited (MSIL), was established on January 18, 1923 by Sir M Visvesvaraya. It is now a steel plant under the jurisdiction of the Steel Authority of India Limited.

Sir M. Visveswaraiah was a visionary engineer and statesman who strongly advocated for industrialization as the path to prosperity for the state.

M.S.K. cotton mill, was set up in 1884 at Kalaburagi. Later, big cotton textile mills like Binny Mills and Minerva Mills of Bengaluru, K.R.Mill of Mysuru, Cotton Mill of Davanagere etc. were established before independence.

Under the leadership of the Wodeyar dynasty and Sir M. Visveswaraiah, the Princely State of Mysuru was widely considered a model state for its industrial and social progress.

Karnataka is recognized as the second-largest exporter of textiles in India, following major hubs like Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu.

Mandya is called as Sugar City of Karnataka. Sugar factories contribute majorly to the economy of this district.

The sugar industry in Karnataka is a major agro-based sector that operates on a large scale due to the high volume of sugarcane production.

The Mysuru Sugar Company, located in Mandya, was the primary and only sugar factory in the state until 1951.

Karnataka Sugar Industry ranks 3rd in terms of its contribution of sugar in the total sugar production in the country. 

The first sugar factory in Karnataka was established in 1933. Since then there has been a steady growth of the industry and Karnataka has now emerged as one of the leading sugar producing states in the country.

Mandya is known as the sugar bowl of Karnataka, and the first modern sugar factory was established there.

Some cotton mills have been closed down more recently. The reasons for this are shortage of cotton, obsolete machines, lack of electricity supply, increasing production costs, stiff competition from synthetic fibre cloth etc.

Under the Suvarna Textile Policy, the government established finished goods parks in 11 districts to boost the textile sector.

Based on standard geography textbooks for Karnataka, there are approximately 75 iron ore mines in the state. This figure is often cited in regional economic and resource studies.

Karnataka ranks fourth in the production of paper in the country. Karnataka produces 3.6 lakh tonnes of paper products per year. 

Karnataka produces 9,000 metric tons of mulberry silk of a total of 20,000 metric tons of mulberry silk produced in the country, thus contributing to nearly 45% of the country's total mulberry silk. In Karnataka, silk is mainly produced in the Mysore district. It is a patent registered product under KSIC.

The New Mangalore Port is the primary port used for the export of iron ore from the Kudremukh mines. Its proximity to the mining region makes it the most efficient logistical choice.
