Chalukyas of Badami - Class VIII

Vishnuvardhana was the important Hoysala king who came after Nrupakama, Ereyanga and Ballala. As a great king of this dynasty, he won Gangavadi from the Cholas and earned the title ‘Talakadugonda’. He tried to expand his
kingdom but was defeated by the
Chalukyan king Vikramaditya VI.

Aihole, located in Karnataka, is often referred to as the cradle of Indian architecture due to the early development of temple architecture styles there during the Chalukya dynasty.

Pulakeshin II, a prominent ruler of the Chalukya dynasty of Badami, assumed the title 'Dakshinapatheshwara' (Lord of the South) after his military successes.

Ereya was the precoronation name of Pulakesin-II.  He was the most famous ruler of Chalukyan Dynasty. He was the fourth Chalukyan Ruler. Most important source of information regarding the rule of Pulakeshin II is provided by Aihole inscription.

Chalukyas of Badami was the earliest Chalukyan Empire founded by Pulakesin-I in sixth century AD. It ruled mostly over Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Shaivism and Vaishnavism religions flourished during the reign of Chalukyas of Badami.

Pulakeshin II defeated the Pallava king Mahendravarman I in the Battle of Pullalur, which was a significant event in the conflict between the Chalukyas and the Pallavas.

Chalukyan dynasty is one of the royal dynasty that ruled greater parts of Southern India and central India between 6th and the 12th centuries. Pulakesin I was the founder of this dynasty. Pulakesin-I ruled from AD 535-66 from the hill fort of Vatapi, the capital of Chalukyan dynasty. 

The Aihole inscription was written by the Ravikirti, who is the court poet of Pulakesin-II. Most important source of information regarding the rule of Pulakeshin II is provided by Aihole inscription. The inscription is one of the finest pieces of poetry written in Sanskrit language and Hale Kannada script.

The Aihole inscription, which records the victory of Pulakeshin II over Harshavardhana, was composed by his court poet Ravikirthi.

Pulakeshin II was the most powerful ruler of the Chalukya dynasty based in Badami (also known as Vatapi) in modern-day Karnataka.

The early Chalukyas, who rose to power in the 6th century, established their capital at Badami, which was then known as Vatapi.

Pulakeshin-II or Pulikeshi-II or Immadi Pulikeshi was the Chalukya emperor who ruled from 610 CE to 642 CE.

He was the greatest ruler in the illustrious Chalukya dynasty and one of the greatest ever kings in Indian history.Pulakeshin-II meeting with the envoys from Persia.

Vatapi (modern-day Badami) served as the capital city for the Chalukya dynasty during their early period of dominance in the Deccan.

Statement I is correct as Pulakeshin I established the dynasty. Statement II is incorrect because Harshavardhana was defeated by Pulakeshin II, not the other way around, and the dates are inaccurate. Statement III is incorrect as Vikramaditya I reigned later in the 7th century.

The Chalukyas of Badami were great builders as well as art-lovers. They built beautiful temples at Badami, Aihole and Pattadakallu. They developed a special style of sculpture called ‘The Chalukya Style’ in Indian architecture. Aihole was one of the cradles of temple architecture. Evolution of the series of temples architecture was first experimented here. This style found its full expression at Pattadakallu.

Pulikeshi II, the Chalukya king, established his brother Kubja Vishnuvardhana as the ruler of the Vengi region, which led to the formation of the Eastern Chalukya dynasty.

Pulakeshin II famously defeated the Pallava king Mahendravarman I during his military campaigns in the south.

Pulakeshin I is historically recognized as the founder of the Badami Chalukya dynasty, establishing his capital at Vatapi (Badami).

Vijjika (or Vijaya Bhattarika) is a noted Sanskrit poetess associated with the Chalukya court, credited with writing the play Kaumudi Mahotsava.

Hiuen Tsang (Xuanzang) visited India during the reign of Harshavardhana. While he traveled extensively, he did not visit the court of Chandragupta II, who lived centuries earlier.

The temples at Badami, Pattadakallu, and Aihole represent the Chalukya style of architecture, which is a synthesis of Nagara and Dravida styles, often referred to as the Vesara style.

The Kappe Arabhatta inscription is a significant early Kannada inscription found in Badami, written in the Tripadi (three-line) poetic meter.

Both statements are correct: Kubja-Vishnuvardhana did establish the Eastern Chalukya kingdom, and the Aihole inscription is a famous eulogy composed by the court poet Ravikirti.
