Hickey's Bengal Gazette was an English newspaper published from Kolkata (then Calcutta), India. It was the first major newspaper in India, started in 1780. It was published for two years. It was founded by James Augustus Hickey.

• During independence movement Indian technology was totally underdeveloped and books and newspapers were the only source to spread philosophical thoughts of people from one to the other and these sources were very much available at salons and coffee houses.

The printing press first came to Goa with Portuguese missionaries in the mid-sixteenth century. Jesuit priests learnt Konkani and printed several tracts. By 1674, about 50 books had been printed in the Konkani and in Kanara languages. • He established Sathya Sodhak Samaj to spread caste equality. In 1873 he wrote Gulamgiri which means slavery and dedicated to all Americans who fought to free slaves. He established a link between lower castes of India and black slaves of America.
  

Al Hilal was a weekly Urdu language journal established by the Indian leader Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He began publishing it in 1912 to arouse a new political consciousness, a desire for freedom in the religious class. He called for a revival of the faith, to win the freedom represented by Islam, which was relevant to all aspects of life.

Lord Wellesley introduced the Censorship of the Press Act in 1799 (often cited as 1794 in some older texts, though 1799 is the standard historical date) to control the press during the war with France.

The Times of India was established in 1838 under the name The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce.
