Statins are products of fermentation by yeast Monascus purpureus which resemble mevalovate and are competitive inhibitors of $\beta - hydroxy-\beta - methylglutaryl$ or HMG CoA reductase.This inhibits cholesterol synthesis. Statins are, therefore, used in lowering blood cholesterol, e.g., lovastatin, pravastatin, simvastatin.
