Earthquakes and Tsunamis - Class-VI

The major earthquake that struck Nepal in April 2015 had a magnitude of 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale.

The 2015 Nepal earthquake was caused by the collision of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, a process known as plate tectonics.

• Indira point is a village located in the Nicobar district of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was previously called as Pygmalion Point and Parsons Point. It is the southernmost tip of India’s territory.
  
• It was drowned by the tsunami that hit on 26th January 2004. This was the first place drowned in tsunami. 
  

Lifts (elevators) are dangerous during earthquakes because they can lose power or get stuck, trapping occupants inside.

During the Earthquake one should stay calm. If he’s indoors, stay inside. If he’s outside, stay outside.

If he’s indoors, stand against a wall near the center of the building, stand in a doorway, or crawl under heavy furniture (a desk or table). Stay away from windows and outside doors. If he’s outdoors, stay in the open away from power lines or anything that might fall. Stay away from buildings (stuff might fall off the building or the building could fall on you).

Don't use matches, candles, or any flame. Broken gas lines and fire don't mix. Don't use elevators (they'll probably get stuck anyway).

The word Tsunami is a Japanese term, where 'tsu' means harbor and 'nami' means wave.

In the Japanese word Tsunami, 'tsu' translates to harbor, reflecting how these waves were historically observed hitting harbors.

In the Japanese word Tsunami, 'nami' translates to waves.

One should not go to see the Coasts when the Tsunami warning is issued. They should listen to a NOAA Weather Radio, Coast Guard emergency frequency station, or other reliable source for updated emergency information. Authorities will issue a warning only if they believe there is a real threat from tsunami. They should follow instructions issued by local authorities. 

Tamil Nadu was the state in India most severely affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Mangroves act as a natural barrier, absorbing the energy of incoming waves and reducing the impact of tsunamis on the coastline.

During an earthquake, it is safest to stay away from structures that might collapse, such as buildings, bridges, and trees.

There are few do's and don'ts for students when an earth quake occurs.
When an earthquake occurs we should leave the house within 30 seconds. We should not stay near the doors as it is easily breakable.
