occupation to a large population.

Uzhavar Sandhai scheme was initiated for direct selling of fruits and vegetables at a fair price by the farmers to the consumers without any intermediaries. The first Uzhavar Sandhai was started at Madurai in 1999.

As Tamil Nadu has well developed roadways and railways, domestic trade is efficiently handled among the districts of Tamil Nadu. For marketing the commodities, there are several market committees. At present there are about 303 APMCs in the state.

The exchange of goods between regions is primarily driven by differences in natural endowments, including climate, geology, soil types, vegetation, and the availability of mineral resources.

India had trade through the sea routes in the pre-colonial period. Surat was the main port on the western coast, which connected India to the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. At present, there are around 303 Agriculture Produce Marketing Centres (APMCs) distributed all over Tamil Nadu. The APMC is further classified into Primary and Secondary marketing centres and non-regulated marketing centres.

Trade is called an engine of growth because it helps in the increase of foreign currency reserves; it makes available all kinds of goods anywhere; trade increases technology transfer from one country to another; it improves the welfare of the workers; and it helps to increase the total production of a country.

Buying
and selling of commodities and services within the country is known as internal
trade. Whether the products are bought from local market, central market, and
departmental store or from a door-to-door salesperson, all these are examples of
internal trade. No custom duty or import
duty is levied on this type of trade. Internal trade is a field of economy that
includes both wholesale and retail trade.

• International trade is the exchange of capital, goods, and services across international borders or territories.
