Gonds and ahom society - class-VII

The Ahoms are a tribe in the North Eastern part of India. They migrated from Myanmar to the Brahmaputra valley in the 13th century. The Bhuiyans were landlords.
The forced labour were called as Paiks. Ahom society which was divided into clans or Khels.

Considerable social change took place in the subcontinent from the 11th-12th century onwards. Varna-based society and tribal people constantly interacted with each other. This interaction caused both kinds of societies to adapt and change.

The nar patal still acts as the symbolic focus of the village in his hereditary role. an arrangement in which the son/ daughter gets the father/ mother’s title or property automatically after their death is called ‘heriditary’.  He is responsible to the Panch but in many cases he can be an effective leader.  While the panch only meet once in a while the headman functions on a daily basis.Whenever a headman becomes arrogant and goes against the wishes of the people, the Panch may remove him and replace him with another person.  Or the other families may just leave the village and settle in a new place.

In traditional Gond society, the village council or 'Panch' acts as the representative body for the community, reflecting the collective will of the society.

The headman typically handles the day-to-day administration and decision-making for the village, while the Panch serves as a deliberative body for significant issues.

In many traditional democratic tribal structures, the community council (Panch) holds the authority to hold the leader accountable, including the power to remove them if they act against the community's interests.

Main fuction of the patla is both. That is to ensure the unity of the villagers and to negotiate with the outsiders and government agencies on behalf of the villagers. They believe in majority every one enjoy every movement of the functions with unity. And they enjoyed and include other unknown peoples and an apart of behalf from a government.

Village headmen derive their authority from the village Panch or the council of adult male householders. This is council has the last word in matters concerning the village as a whole and the headman is no more than its chairman. The village panch in a sense represents the Gond society as a whole.The Gond economy is agricultural, so the cycle of sowing and harvesting is the subject of any number of songs and oral narratives, which express the joy, anguish, apprehension and exhilaration of a farming community.

The headman had to persuade and keep the Members of the community happy to retain his position and could not go against their wishes.They have less genetic affinity with local populations in Telangana and other states. Gonds ruled in four kingdoms in central India between the 16th and 18th centuries. They built number of forts, palaces, temples, tanks and lakes during the rule of the Gonds dynasty. The Gondwana kingdom survived until the late 16th century. They also gained control over the Malwa after the decline of the Mughals followed by the Marathas in 1690.

The village Councile of gond tribe divides the Gonds into  Castes called Ahir, Agaria, Dhuli and Pardhan. The Village has typically several halmets.The headman is a local government or tribal post. The Ahoms, who established the Ahom Kingdom in the Brahmaputra Valley, were of Tai-Shan origin, which is part of the broader Mongoloid ethnic group.
