The one who constructs history is an historian.
They use historical evidences to be particular and authentic
about history. So it is believed that, ‘there cannot be history
without sources.’ The
sources of history can be classified into two groups:

After 1953, the Press Trust of India has been an important source of primary details of important events and of articles on important subjects. Press Trust of India has provided reports, photographs and articles on financial and scientific issues to newspapers.

Through newspapers, we can get information about national and international affairs, politics, art, sports, literature and social and cultural affairs. Newspaper contain matters related to human life.

The Information and Broadcasting Department published INDIA 2000, an annual reference book. This reference book is created under 'Research, Reference and Training Department'.

History can also be learnt through customs
and traditions, folk arts, folk literature as
well as historical documents. All these are
known as ‘sources of history’. Artefacts, Inscriptions, Manuscripts and Monuments are all sources of history.

All States of India have museums that depict the characteristics and display the cultural and social heritage of the State. They enable us to understand history.  Apart from the Government Museums, some private collectors also setup their own museums. They are based on distinctive subjects.

The Postal Department issues postage stamps on a wide variety of themes like political leaders, flowers, animals, birds, an event, or the silver, golden, diamond jubilees or centenary, bicentenary, tercentenary of different events.

The coins from 1950 to those used at present, the metals used for making them, their different shapes, the diversity of subjects on them together help us to understand the important contemporary issues in India. For example, coins to convey the message of population control and coins communicating the importance of agriculture and of farmers.

Television, films and internet, all of them are considered to be audio-visual sources since they combine pictures or moving visuals along with sounds to deliver information.

Monuments include samadhis, graves, veergala. They all provide insights about that period looking at them, we come to know about the development of architecture, the economic conditions, the quality of art.

Indian government issued the 'Jal Copper' stamp in 1977. Jal Copper was an internationally acclaimed philatelist, i.e. an expert on the subject of 'postage stamps'. 

The coins made by different rulers using metals like gold, silver, copper are important source of history. From these coins we learn about the rulers. Different rulers have different type of coins.

The government of India started the Film and Television Institute of India at Pune in 1960 with the purpose of providing public education.

The
Vedas and post Vedic literature form an important source of ancient
Indian history. It includes Brahmanas, the Upanishads, the epics of
Ramayana and Mahabharata, the Jain and Buddhist literature, plays,
poems, stone and pillar inscriptions, travelogues of foreign travellers
etc.

Gold was the first metal that came into use by the Prehistoric man. It was discovered around 6000 BCE. It was a soft metal and were therefore predominantly used for decoration and bullion for trade. Copper came into use soon after gold.

From coins we learn about the rulers,  their period, governance, religious ideas, personal details etc. Similarly, we also learn about the financial transactions and economic conditions prevailing at the time.
