Atmosphere and Winds - Class XI

The ionosphere is a region of the upper atmosphere that contains a high concentration of ions and free electrons, making it electrically conductive.

Nitrogen (N2) makes up approximately 78.08 percent of the Earth's atmosphere by volume.

Standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is approximately 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi).

Trace gases are those present in very small concentrations in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is considered a trace gas, whereas Nitrogen and Oxygen are major components.

Acid fog can have a very low pH, and values around 1.7 are documented in highly polluted areas.

Subsidence inversion occurs when air sinks, typically in high-pressure systems like anticyclones, leading to warming and stability.

The atmospheric lifetime of carbon monoxide (CO) is generally estimated to be around 2 to 3 months, making 2.5 months the most accurate choice.

Accurate weather prediction can be made only if all the air measurements i.e. temperature, humidity and wind direction are considered. 

The land has compactly arranged molecules through which conduction takes place and as it is an insulator heat, the heat remains on the surface of the earth i.e. land whereas water has loosely packed molecule heat is transferred by convection and thus it takes a longer time to heat up. Also, water has a higher specific heat capacity, meaning that it requires more energy to heat water to the same temperature as a piece of land. Water also reflects more incoming radiation. The land is dark, rough, and solid, which all contribute to the absorption of the radiation. Unlike water, the land is unable to retain heat for as long as water.

An anemometer is the standard instrument used to measure wind speed or velocity.

When air is saturated, relative humidity is 100 percent and the dew point equals the air temperature. Increasing the temperature would decrease the relative humidity, not cause condensation.

The Beaufort scale is an empirical measure that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land. It ranges from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane-force winds). Decibels measure sound intensity, Richter scale measures earthquake magnitude, and Fujita scale (misspelled as Fajita here) measures tornado intensity.

By meteorological convention, wind direction is defined as the direction from which the wind is blowing.

Advection refers to the transport of an atmospheric property (like heat or moisture) by the horizontal movement of air (wind).

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) absorb and emit infrared radiation within the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect.

Trace gases, excluding water vapor, make up a very small fraction of the atmosphere, approximately 0.03-0.04 percent, with 0.02 percent being the closest provided option.

The rate at which temperature decreases with altitude in the atmosphere is known as the lapse rate.

The Megha-Tropiques mission is a joint satellite mission between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the French space agency, CNES.

The major greenhouse gases are water vapour, which causes about 3670% of the greenhouse effect; carbon dioxide (CO$ _2$), which causes 926%; methane (CH$ _4$), which causes 49%; and ozone (O$ _3$), which causes 37%. Water vapour is the most abundant greenhouse gas, it acts as a feedback to the climate. Water vapour increases as the earth's atmosphere warms, making these the most important feedback mechanisms to the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide is released through natural processes such as respiration and volcano eruptions and through human activities such as deforestation, land use changes, and burning fossil fuels. This is the most important long-lived cause of climate change.
