Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) Fundamentals

In Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB), the Control Center Service is a component of OWB Server. It's responsible for deploying and executing ETL mappings and processes.

The Control Center Service in Oracle Warehouse Builder is managed by the Control Center Manager, which provides the interface for controlling deployment and execution of ETL objects.

A standard OWB Repository user cannot be the owner of the repository. Repository ownership requires elevated privileges beyond standard user access. The owner is typically a special administrative user with full control over repository configuration and management.

Objects created in OWB are first stored in the Workspace, which serves as a staging area for development work. The workspace holds objects before they are deployed to the actual repository. This separation allows for version control and testing before making changes permanent.

Synonyms cannot be imported into the OWB repository like other objects. Synonyms are database reference objects that exist in the database layer, not repository metadata. OWB works with tables, views, and other schema objects directly, not synonyms.

Registering a target schema in OWB requires workspace owner privileges. This is an administrative task that defines connection and access details for the target database. Regular database users or SYSTEM user don't perform this registration function.

When importing objects from the database into OWB, only metadata (structure definitions) is imported, not the actual data rows. The repository stores design information about objects - table definitions, column types, constraints - but remains separate from the operational data itself.

Validating maps and operator conditions is mandatory in OWB, not optional. Validation checks for syntax errors, data type mismatches, and logical consistency before deployment. This quality gate prevents deployment of flawed transformations.

In Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB), parallel hints on tables are configured within the Configuration Properties of the mapping or table object. Other components like the Mapping Editor or Control Center Manager are used for designing logic or deploying and running objects, not configuring low-level physical parallel execution properties.

BI tools cannot connect directly to the OWB Repository. The repository is an internal metadata store for OWB design-time operations. BI tools connect to deployed data warehouses, databases, or data marts - not to the development repository itself.

Synchronizing from the Design Center only affects the current project being worked on. Each project in OWB has its own context and synchronization scope. Changes are not automatically propagated to other projects or across the entire repository.

OMB (Oracle Metadata Base) Plus is the scripting interface for OWB. It provides a command-line interface for automating repository operations, batch processing, and programmatic access to OWB functionality. OMB Plus enables automation beyond the GUI.

Mappings are not restricted to target modules only. In OWB, mappings can be created in various module types including source modules, target modules, and other modules depending on the ETL design. The transformation logic can be centralized rather than forced into targets.

Maps are deployed to Oracle database as PL/SQL packages. Each mapping becomes a package containing procedures for the ETL logic. This package structure supports parameters, error handling, and modular execution of data transformations.

During map execution, intermediate data is stored in the temporary tablespace. This workspace holds sorted data, join results, and other transient datasets generated during transformation. The temp tablespace provides scratch space without consuming permanent storage.

Registering a location in OWB creates a connection to a physical storage location (like a database server), not a link between a module and its schema. Locations are separate connection objects, while module-to-schema relationships are established through metadata configuration.
