Understanding Media - Class VI

Freedom of media is a form of right to freedom of speech and expression. In a democracy, media must remain independent and unbiased if democratic principles are to hold true. 

Khabar Lahriya: It is a newspaper which is a fortnightly that is run by Dalit women in Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh. It reports the issues of the Dalits. It has its reach to the farmers, shopkeepers, school teachers, panchayat members and literate women.

The first newspaper to be printed in India was "Bengal Gazette" by James Augustus Hickey in 1780. It was a weekly English newspaper. 

We tend to discuss newspapers and magazines as the print media and TV and radio as the electronic media. This naming is related to
the different technologies that these media use. Newspapers and magazines are called print media because they present information in printed form.

The different technologies that mass media use are
expensive. Also, the technologies that mass
media use keep changing and so a lot of money is
spent on getting the latest technology. Due to these
costs, the mass media needs a great deal of money
to do its work. As a result, most television channels
and newspapers are part of big business houses.

The technology that mass media uses has changed over the years and continues to change. The changing technology, or machines, and making technology more modern, helps media to reach more people. It also improves the quality of sound and the images that we see. It also changes the ways in which we think about our lives.

Digital media technology is helpful in bridging gaps and differences. With the revolution of technology in Media e.g., Television. People can watch happenings all over the world whether it is news, fashion trends, politics, knowledge, charity, humour and so on. We are linked to the world virtually and TV has determined what we know and how we think, the way we believe and how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.

Mass media is the means of communication used to reach the general public. The platforms of mass media are televisions, newspaper, radio, internet, magazines etc. It provides news, entertainment, and reflect culture. The set up of mass media whether it is a TV studio or newspaper agency require a lot of money. Mass media earns money by advertisement such as cars, chocolate, shampoo, daily utility things etc. Mass media is connected to business houses to generate regular income.

Television images travel huge distances through satellites and cables and allow us to view news and entertainment channels from other parts of the world. Most of the cartoons that we see on television are mostly from Japan or the United States. We can now be sitting in Chennai or Jammu and can see images of a storm that has hit the coast of Florida in the United States. Thus, television has brought the world closer to us.

news item, or scenes from a movie, or the lyrics of a
song from being shared with the larger public, this
is referred to as censorship. There have been periods
in Indian history when the government censored the
media. The worst of these was during the Emergency
between 1975-1977.

Media plays an important role in democracy. It is regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy. It provides news and discusses events taking place in the country. It makes people aware of how the government works, what are the policies being implemented by the government so that people can take action accordingly.

Electronic media are media that uses electronics or electromechanical energy to transmit the informations. For example TV, radio, audio recording, video recording, CD-ROM, and online contents. Through electronic media information reaches to the audience much faster than print media.

Khabar Lahariya is an Indian local newspaper started in the year 2002. The first issue of the newspaper was published in may 2002 from the town of Karwi in Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh. The newspaper covers local political news, local crime report, social issues, and entertainment all reported from a feminist point of view. It is run by Dalit women and published in rural dialects of Hindi and Avadhi.
