Terms used in statistics

Gottfried Achenwall defined statistics as "Statistics are collection of noteworthy facts concerning state both historical and descriptive".

Webster defined statistic as "Statistics refers to the classified facts representing the conditions of the people in the State....especially those facts which can be stated in numbers or in tables of numbers or in any tabular classified arrangement"

Wappans defined statistics as "Statistics is an aggregate knowledge brought together for a practical end namely the knowledge of concrete states".

Kendall defined statistics as "By statistics, we mean quantitative data affected to a marked extent by multiplicity of causes".

The definition given by Horace Secrist is “Statistics as the aggregate of facts affected to mark extent by the multiplicity of causes, numerically expressed, enumerated or estimated according to a reasonable standard of accuracy, collected in a systematic manner for the predetermined purpose and placed in relation to each other”

According to, Croxton & Cowden, "Statistics may be defined as the science of collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data."

The definition given by Tippitt is “Statistics is both a science and an art.” 

AL Bowley defines statistics as "Statistics is numerical statement of facts in any development of enquiry placed in relation to each other"

Statistics involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data. Comparability is a fundamental attribute required to make numerical facts meaningful and useful for statistical analysis.

King's law of statistics emphasizes that a sample chosen from a large group will reflect the characteristics of the group, and this law becomes more reliable as the size of the group increases.

Statistic has been called "science of king" as in ancient times it was mainly used by kings to collect information about their kingdom and the people in it (similar to the government today). This is why its also called "political arithmetic" or "the science of state craft" as politicians may use it as a powerful tool to gain popularity among the public (by boasting about high economic growth or low unemployment and inflation rates) and thus get votes to remain in power.

There are two types of statically data,

1-An advantage of using primary data is that researchers are collecting information for the specific purposes of their study. In essence, the questions the researchers ask are tailored to elicit the data that will help them with their study. Researchers collect the data themselves, using surveys, interviews and direct observations.

2-There are several types of secondary data. They can include information from the national population census and other government information collected by Statistics Canada. One type of secondary data that’s used increasingly is administrative data. This term refers to data that is collected routinely as part of the day-to-day operations of an organization, institution or agency. There are any number of examples: motor vehicle registrations, hospital intake and discharge records, workers’ compensation claims records, and more.

Data is classified as both primary and the secondary data.
