Garbage Disposal and Waste Management

Wastes that are capable of being broken down or decomposed rapidly by the actions of microorganisms are called as biodegradable wastes. Fruit-peels, cake, lime juice, wood and grass can be easily decomposed by the microbes.

Landfills are designated sites specifically engineered for the disposal of waste materials. Dumping garbage in gardens, playgrounds, or roadsides is unsanitary and harmful to the environment.

The methods of disposal of kitchen waste include Composting as well as landfilling. Composting is a process in which organic matter like compost is decomposed. It is done with the help of certain micro-organisms which can utilize these organic substances and convert it into simpler substances. And landfilling is a process in which the compost is buried inside the land so that the gases produced by the rotten food and other organic material is disposed of. This also increases the nutritional value of the soil.

Milk tin would take years to decompose as it is made up of metals. Decomposition of metals takes longer time as compared to pizza box- cardboard, apple peel and tissue paper.

A landfill is a low-lying area or excavation site where waste is deposited, compacted, and covered with soil. It is the standard method for large-scale municipal waste disposal.

Landfilling involves disposing of waste by burying it in designated areas. While the question phrasing is slightly awkward, it clearly refers to the burial process of landfilling.

In waste segregation systems, green bins are typically designated for biodegradable or organic waste, which can be composted. Other colors are generally used for recyclable or non-biodegradable waste.

Rags are non-biodegradable or difficult-to-recycle materials that are commonly disposed of in landfills. Kitchen waste and agricultural waste are better suited for composting.

In many waste management programs, blue bins are specifically designated for recyclable materials like paper, plastic, and metal. This helps separate recyclables from organic waste.

Redworms (vermicomposting) consume organic matter like vegetable peels, plant waste, and animal waste. Rags, which are often synthetic or treated fibers, cannot be processed by redworms.

Landfill is a highly engineered facility to ensure the safe removal of waste from the society. The modern landfills not only can serve as reclaimed land which can be converted into parks and playgrounds, they also serve in other purposes like methane production (landfill gas) etc. 

Landfilling is widely practiced as a low cost method for garbage disposal, especially for large volumes of municipal solid waste, although recycling and vermicomposting are more sustainable.

Burning plastics releases toxic chemicals and pollutants into the atmosphere, making it an environmentally hazardous practice. Landfilling, vermicomposting, and chemical treatment are managed disposal methods.

Leachate is the liquid that drains or 'leaches' from a landfill. It is formed when water passes through the waste, picking up pollutants, and is a major environmental concern.

Once a landfill is closed and properly sealed, the land can be reclaimed for public use, such as parks, sports fields, or other recreational areas, provided it is safe.
