The main cause is the industrial burning of coal and other fossil fuels, the waste gases from which contain sulphur and nitrogen oxides which combine with atmospheric water to form acids.

Mining, deforestation, and utilization of water resources for industrial production have destroyed natural habitats and forced organisms to move further into the wild, exposing them to predators and intolerable living conditions. Consequently, some wildlife species have faced extinction while several others remain highly endangered.
