Consumer awareness, education and protection - class-X

Consumer has the right to seek redressal against any unfair trade practices.

The definition of Right to Choose as per the Consumer Protection Act 1986 is ‘the right to be assured, wherever possible, to have access to a variety of goods and services at competitive prices’. For regulating the market place, there is just one factor required and that is competition.

Consumer Protection Act 1986, means that consumer's interests will receive due consideration at appropriate forums. It also includes right to be represented in various forums formed to consider the consumer's welfare. 

Every year National Consumer Day is celebrated on 24^th December. The main idea behind the celebration of this day is to remind people, the importance of consumer awareness. 

The act that provides protection to the consumers against the use of fraudulent marks is "The Trademarks Act" which was passed in the year 1999. This law deals with the mechanism of registration, protection of trademark and prevention of fraudulent trademark.

Any consumer in India has right to know about the date of production, expiry date of the product and address of the producer but he cannot know the production process.

To raise global awareness about consumer rights and needs, across the globe March 15 is celebrated as World Consumers Day. World Consumers Day aims to protect consumers across the globe against market abuses. The world's first consumer movement was in 1983, in the United States  In this year of 1983, the first celebration of World Consumer Rights Day was marked. Since then, this day  is celebrated annually on March 15.

March 15 is observed as the 'World Consumers' day'. This day has a historic importance as it was on this day in 1962, when the Bill for Consumer rights was moved in the US Congress.

The consumer protection consists of a list of laws constructed to protect rights of the consumers.

Its not adopted in J&K due to the instability of the state. 

By following way a consumer gets exploited by the manufacturer:-

• High Price- Very often traders charge high prices from their consumers than the prescribed retail price.
• Fake Goods- It may sometimes happen that traders sell fake or duplicate goods in the name of genuine goods.
• 
  Substandard Quality- The traders may cheat the consumers by degrading the quality of the
  product and selling those in the market like expired products, defective
  items.

The consumer movement marks 15th March with World Consumer Rights Day every year, as a means of raising global awareness about consumer rights and needs. Celebrating the day is a chance to demand that the rights of all consumers are respected and protected, and to protest against market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights.

Consumer sovereignty is an economic theory stating that the consumer is the king in a free market, as their purchasing decisions determine what is produced and in what quantities.
