Types of taste - class-V

The sense of taste is located in the taste buds of the tongue.it is an ovoid group of sensory and supporting cells. The sensory cells end in hair like processes and have nerve fibres extending from their bases.

Taste buds are mainly located in upper surface of the tongue and some are also present on the other areas in the mouth and throat.

The tongue is a muscular structure which is present in the oral cavity. The upper surface of the tongue is called as the dorsum. There are papillae on the dorsum. These are raised and elevated structures on the upper region of the tongue. There are several taste receptors on the papillae. The taste receptors help in detection of taste. 

The four basic kinds of tastes are: sweet, salty, sour and bitter. The salty/sweet taste buds are located near the front of the tongue, the sour taste buds line the sides of the tongue, and the bitter taste buds are found at the back of the tongue. The center of the tongue has few taste buds.

The tip of the tongue is most sensitive to sweet tastes, while the sides are more sensitive to salty and sour tastes, and the back is sensitive to bitter tastes.

• Additionally, tomatoes are rich in flavour known as umami, a taste that is thought of by most as very savoury and pleasant. Hence, Tomato is a juicy fruit which tastes sweet and sour.
