Kodagu and Kittur History - Class VI

Kodagu was ruled by many dynasties. Haleri Dynasty ruled Kodagu from seventeenth century. Bidanuru was their capital. Doddaveerappa is the most famous king of this dynasty. Chikkaveeraraj was the last ruler. He was very weak. The British took advantage of this and took over the administration. Kodagu remained an independent state after Indian independence. In 1956, it got integrated into then Mysuru State. 

Swamy Aparampar was a saint who played a significant role in organizing farmers in Coorg against the British administration during the Haleri rule era.

The Haleri dynasty ruled the kingdom of Coorg (Kodagu) from the early 17th century until the British annexation in 1834.

The main cause of the Amarasulya revolt that took place in 1837 was due to change in the land revenue. Amarasulya was detached from Kodagu in 1834 and added to South Canara. There after, unlike unlike the other Rajas where tax used to paid based on the harvest, the British charged a fixed tax. In 1837, the farmers had difficulty paying the taxes. This ultimately led to the revolt.
