Mediterranean Regions: Climate and Vegetation

The Mediterranean region covers a relatively small portion of the Earth's total land area, approximately 1 percent.

The Mediterranean climate is characterized by winter rainfall, which is influenced by the movement of westerly winds and associated cyclonic systems.

The west and southwest margins of continents in the mid-latitudes typically experience a Mediterranean climate, which supports Mediterranean vegetation.

The Mediterranean Sea is bordered by Europe, Africa, and Asia. Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere and does not touch the Mediterranean Sea.

Mediterranean-type climates are found in California, central Chile, South Africa, and parts of Australia, but not in Russia, which has a predominantly continental climate.

Citrus fruits, olives, and grapes are iconic crops of the Mediterranean climate due to the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Suez
Canal is a sea-level waterway running in north-south direction across the
Isthmus of Suez in Egypt. It connects the Mediterranean and the Red seas. This
canal separates the African continent from Asia. Suez Canal extends 120 miles
between Port Said in the north and Suez in the south. It is one of the world’s
most heavily used shipping lanes.

Mediterranean
forests are found in areas around Mediterranean Sea, Central Chile, South-West
USA, Australia, Africa. They have thick barks and wax coated leaves which help
them reduce transpiration. Due to these characteristics, Mediterranean trees
adapt themselves to dry summers. Mediterranean Forests are known as 'Orchards

The forests of California are famous for redwood trees. They are long-lived evergreen trees. They live 1,200 to 1,800 years or more. These trees are the tallest and oldest living things on the earth. Nowadays these trees are a famous tourist attraction in the area.

• Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt that connects the Mediterranean sea with the Red sea. It is 193 km long and has reduced thousands of kilometers of the journey between the Atlantic ocean and the Indian ocean.

During summer, regions of Mediterranean climate are strongly influenced by cold ocean currents which keep the weather in the region dry, stable, and pleasant. In winter, however, they are no longer influenced by the cold ocean currents and therefore warmer water settles near land and causes clouds to form and rainfall becomes much more likely.
