Peripheral Nervous System - Class XI

Humans possess 12 pairs of cranial nerves, while frogs possess 10 pairs. This is a standard comparative anatomy fact in vertebrate biology.

The trochlear nerve (cranial nerve IV), historically known as the pathetic nerve, is the smallest cranial nerve in terms of the number of axons it contains and its slender appearance. It supplies the superior oblique muscle of the eye. Olfactory (I) and optic (II) are larger sensory nerves, while oculomotor (III) is much thicker.

Cranial nerve II is the Optic nerve, VII is the Facial nerve, VIII is the Vestibulocochlear (auditory) nerve, and IX is the Glossopharyngeal nerve.

Meissner's plexus (submucosal plexus) is located in the submucosa layer of the gastrointestinal tract, while Auerbach's plexus (myenteric plexus) is located between the circular and longitudinal muscle layers of the muscularis externa.

The dorsal root of a spinal nerve contains the axons of sensory neurons, whose cell bodies are located in the dorsal root ganglion. The ventral root contains motor neurons.

Cranial nerve IV is the Trochlear nerve, V is the Trigeminal nerve, and VII is the Facial nerve.

The tenth cranial nerve is the Vagus nerve, which is also historically known as the pneumogastric nerve.

The 3rd cranial nerve is the Oculomotor nerve, the 6th is the Abducens nerve, and the 11th is the Accessory (spinal accessory) nerve.

The Vagus nerve (CN X) has the most extensive distribution, branching throughout the thorax and abdomen to innervate various organs, making it the nerve with the maximum branching.

The Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) is a motor nerve that primarily controls the muscles of the tongue.

The Vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and is classified as a mixed nerve because it contains both sensory and motor fibers.

In higher vertebrates (reptiles, birds, mammals) there are 12 pairs of cranial nerves- olfactory (I), optic (II), oculomotor (III), trochlear (IV), trigeminal (V), abducens (VI), facial (VII), vestibulocochlear (VIII), glossopharyngeal (IX), vagus (X), accessory (XI), and hypoglossal (XII).

The vagus nerve historically cited as the pneumogastric nerve, is the tenth cranial nerve or CN X, and interfaces with parasympathetic control of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. The vagus nerves are paired but are normally referred to in the singular. It is the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system in the human body.
