Epithelial Tissues

Non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium forms the lining of vagina.

Stratified squamous epithelium is well suited to the areas in the body subject to constant abrasion.

Keratinised surfaces are kept hydrated and protected from dehydration by glycolipids produced in the stratum granulosum.

The function of epithelium found in the superior ovary is distension. They are made up of transitional epithelium with high elasticity.

Keratinised stratified squamous epithelium covers the skin and provides it strength. It is called stratum corneum.

Goblet cells of intestinal epithelium secrete mucous.

Auditory hair cells are transducer cells, i.e. it is a sensory epithelium where specialised cells reside that convert external signals such as sound into an electrical signal, that the neuronal system can detect.

Endocrine cells of airway epithelium secrete serotonin.

Over the top of the brush-border cell lies a slim, or extracellular matrix known as a glycocalyx. This is made up of oligosaccharide side chains of glycoproteins and glycolipids. The glycocalyx functions in the catalysis of digestion of proteins and carbohydrates.

Germinal epithelium is a modified cuboidal epithelium. Its cells divide and redivide to produce gametes.
