The identity of the other thus formed is necessary both to the individual and to the society, and can be benign. But sometimes it happens that the other, acted upon by various unconscious influences, becomes demonized. This can lead to scapegoating, which in simple societies may produce social equilibrium. In complex societies, where different groups are thrown together, it leads to social conflict, which may take violent forms. Such conflicts are a reflection of ordinary social and economic tensions, and at the same time help to create them.
