Microbiology: Fungi and Algae

Mycena asterina is a species of agaric fungus. It grows singly or scattered on fallen leaves in Atlantic forests. The fruit bodies of the fungus are bioluminescent.

Alexandrium is a genus of dinoflagellates, with many species related to toxin production leading to Paralytic shellfish poisoning. The dinoflagellate cysts produced by this species are considered much more toxic than swimming cells.

This fungus is commonly known as the fool's mushroom. It is a deadly poisonous basidiomycete fungus.

This algae is golden coloured, plicate and has external hairs. It has radially wrinkled dark brown peridioles. Has a two-layered cortex and long narrow spores.

H. capsulatum is a dimorphic fungus that exists as a mold in soil and as a yeast in tissue.
Candida and Cryptococcus are not dimorphic fungi they are true yeast.

It is a nonselective fungal culture medium that permits the growth of virtually all clinically relevant fungi. It is used for the primary recovery of saprophytic and dimorphic fungi.
