Empirics is the study of the signals used to carry a message; the physical characteristics of the medium of communication. Empirics is devoted to the study of communication channels and their characteristics, e.g., sound, light, electronic transmission etc.

Vernacular and vernacular language are terms used to refer to the native language or native dialect of a specific population, especially in the context of a second or foreign language that is more widely spoken (such as a national or standard language, or a lingua franca).

Ethnolinguistics (sometimes called cultural linguistics) is a field of linguistics which studies the relationship between language and culture, and the way different ethnic groups perceive the world.
