A communication device, such as a modem or a network card, both sends (output) and receives (input) data. Trackballs and mice are strictly input devices, while a standard monitor is strictly an output device.

Spreadsheet software, like Microsoft Excel, is specifically designed for organizing, analyzing, and storing data in tabular form, making it ideal for budgets. Word processing is for text, and presentation software is for slideshows.

A network computer, often called a thin client, is a terminal with minimal processing power that relies on a central server for its main operations. It is designed to be a cost-effective and manageable alternative to a full PC in a networked environment. Handhelds and cellular phones are mobile devices rather than network-specific PC variants.

Mainframe computers are high-performance systems designed to handle massive amounts of data and transactions for large organizations. Because they serve the needs of an entire corporation or enterprise, they are frequently referred to as enterprise servers. Workstations and handhelds serve individual users rather than entire enterprises.

Modifier keys are used in conjunction with other keys to modify their output or trigger specific commands. On a standard PC keyboard, the Shift, Ctrl (Control), and Alt (Alternate) keys are the primary modifiers. Keys like Delete, Insert, and Backspace are used for editing and do not function as modifiers.

When a key is pressed, the keyboard controller generates a unique scan code representing that specific key. This code is stored in the keyboard buffer until the operating system or application processes it. This allows the system to keep track of keystrokes even if the CPU is busy with other tasks.

Speech recognition and voice recognition are terms used to describe the technology that converts spoken words into digital text. While they can have technical distinctions in security contexts, they are generally used to describe the same input process in consumer computing. Therefore, both terms are commonly accepted in this context.

Digital cameras and video devices capture images by dividing the visual field into a grid of tiny points called pixels. Each pixel stores color and brightness information, which the computer then uses to reconstruct the image. This process is fundamental to all modern digital imaging.

Resolution refers to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels that make up the display, typically written as a matrix like 1920 by 1080. Higher resolutions provide more detail and clarity by using a denser grid of pixels. Other terms like dot pitch refer to the distance between pixels rather than the total grid size.

A video capture card is a hardware component that allows a computer to receive and digitize analog video signals from external sources like VCRs or camcorders. This enables the user to record, edit, and store analog video content on their hard drive. Standard serial ports or sound cards do not have the necessary bandwidth or inputs for video signals.

Modern video controllers include a dedicated microprocessor, often called a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), to handle complex visual calculations. By offloading these tasks from the main CPU, the system can render graphics more efficiently and improve overall performance. This specialized chip is designed specifically for mathematical operations related to image rendering.

Dot matrix printers are impact printers that create characters one at a time, so their speed is measured in characters per second (cps). In contrast, laser printers are measured in pages per minute (ppm) because they process entire pages at once. Dpi (dots per inch) is a measure of resolution, not speed.

IRIS printers are high-resolution inkjet printers often used in professional graphic arts for digital proofing. They are capable of producing extremely fine detail and color accuracy, reaching resolutions as high as 1800 dpi. These are specialized tools for high-end professional printing rather than standard office use.

Plotters are specialized output devices designed to produce high-quality, large-scale vector graphics and technical drawings. They are commonly used by engineers and architects to print blueprints and maps that require precision on large sheets of paper. Unlike standard printers, they often use pens to draw continuous lines.

Floppy disks and hard drives use magnetic storage technology, where the read/write head contains an electromagnet. This magnet changes the polarity of magnetic particles on the disk surface to represent binary data. Optical drives, by contrast, use lasers to read pits and lands.

The Master Boot Record (MBR) is located in the first sector of a hard drive and contains the code necessary to start the boot process. It identifies where the operating system is located so it can be loaded into the computer's RAM. Without this small program, the computer would not know how to load the OS from the disk.

The data transfer rate measures how much data can be moved across a bus or between devices in a given amount of time. It is typically expressed in megabits per second (Mbps) or megabytes per second (MBps). Clock speed, on the other hand, is measured in Hertz (Hz).

Backing up involves creating copies of important files and programs to protect against data loss from hardware failure or accidental deletion. These duplicates are stored on separate media to ensure they can be restored if the original data is lost. This is a critical part of data maintenance and security.

Unicode is a universal character encoding standard that assigns a unique number to every character, regardless of the platform or language. Unlike ASCII, which is limited to 128 or 256 characters, Unicode can represent over a million different characters, covering almost all written languages. This makes it the global standard for text representation.

Registers are the smallest and fastest type of memory in a computer, located directly inside the CPU. They hold the data and instructions that the processor is currently working on to ensure immediate access. Because they are part of the CPU architecture, they operate at the processor's full speed.

Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) is a type of parallel processing where a single command is applied to multiple data points simultaneously. This is particularly useful for tasks like video processing and scientific simulations where the same operation is repeated many times. It significantly improves efficiency for data-heavy computations.
