The Hoysala Empire (c. 1026-1346 CE), centered in present-day Karnataka with capitals at Belur and Halebidu, was eventually absorbed by the Bahmani Sultanate in the 1340s. Following military campaigns by Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah and his successors, the Hoysala kingdom lost its independence and was dissolved.

Pulakesin II (610-642 CE) was the most powerful ruler of the Western Chalukya dynasty. He adopted the titles 'Sri Prithvi Vallabha' (Lord of Earth) and 'Parameswara' (Supreme Lord) to signify his imperial authority over a vast kingdom that extended from the Narmada River in the north to the Kaveri River in the south.

The Meenakshi Temple at Madurai was built by the Pandyas, a ancient Tamil dynasty that ruled from Madurai. While the present structure dates largely to the Nayak period (16th-17th century), the temple's origins trace back to the Pandyan era. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) and her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva).

During the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3300-1300 BCE), the number sixteen (16) was the dominant standard for weights and measures. This binary system (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.) was highly sophisticated and standardized across the civilization. The weights followed a ratio of 1:2:4:8:16:32, with sixteen being a fundamental unit for measuring goods and commodities.

Mahavira (Vardhamana) is regarded as the historical founder of Jainism. While Jain tradition recognizes 24 Tirthankaras with Rishabha as the first, Mahavira was the 24th and last Tirthankara who lived in the 6th century BCE. He was a contemporary of Buddha and is considered the historical reformer who organized and propagated Jainism as we know it today.

Srirangapatanam (also spelled Srirangapatna) was the capital city of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. This fortified city on an island in the Kaveri River was where Tipu Sultan resisted British expansion until his death in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799. The city contains his palace, the Daria Daulat Bagh, and the place where he fell fighting.

The Holkar state of Indore, under Ahilyabai Holkar and later rulers, did not accept the Subsidiary Alliance system introduced by Lord Wellesley. While the Nizam of Hyderabad, Scindia of Gwalior, and several Rajput states (including Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Bharatpur) accepted the alliance, the Holkars along with the Bhonsles of Nagpur resisted this British policy that effectively made states British protectorates.

Mughal painting achieved its golden age and fullest development during Jahangir's reign (1605-1627). Jahangir was a great patron of arts who maintained a large atelier with painters like Mansur, Bishandas, and Abu'l Hasan. The period saw remarkable developments in portraiture, naturalistic representation of flora and fauna, and the fusion of Persian and Indian styles. While Akbar established the atelier, Jahangir's reign marked its peak.

Punjab was the first permanent home of the Aryans when they entered India. The region known as Sapta Sindhu (land of seven rivers) - comprising Punjab and parts of neighboring areas - is described in the Rigveda as the earliest Aryan settlement. The fertile plains of Punjab, with its five rivers (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej), provided ideal conditions for the agricultural Aryans to settle before they expanded eastward.

Buddha attained enlightenment (Nirvana) at Bodh Gaya (formerly Uruvela) in Bihar, under the Bodhi tree. This event, known as the Great Awakening, occurred after years of ascetic wandering and meditation. Bodh Gaya is thus the most sacred site in Buddhism, where Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha ('the Enlightened One'). Sarnath is where he gave his first sermon, Lumbini his birthplace, and Sanchi is famous for its stupa built by Ashoka.

Al-Biruni accompanied Mahmood of Ghazni during his Indian campaigns in the 11th century and wrote the famous 'Tarikh al-Hind' (History of India). Ibn Batuta came later (14th century), Al-Firdausi was a poet at Mahmood's court but didn't travel to India, and Al-Razi was an earlier scholar. The key is recognizing Al-Biruni as the scholar who documented Indian society and sciences.

The First Buddhist Council was held at Rajagriha (modern Girivraja) soon after Buddha's nirvana under the patronage of King Ajatashatru. Kusinagara is where Buddha attained parinirvana (died), Bodh Gaya is where he attained enlightenment, and Sarnath is where he gave his first sermon. The councils were specifically convened to codify Buddhist teachings.

Arab traders and travelers brought Islam to India's western coast (particularly Kerala) through peaceful maritime trade in the 7th century CE, well before Islamic conquests. Arab merchants came primarily for trade, while 'Arab travelers' better captures those who spread Islam through cultural contact. Turkish warriors conquered North India much later (12th century).

Iltumish (Shams ud-din Iltutmish), the third Sultan of Delhi (1211-1236), introduced the Iqtadari system - a land revenue system where land was assigned to officials (iqtadars) in lieu of salary. Akbar later refined it as the Mansabdari system, and Ala-ud-din Khilji had his own revenue reforms. Muhammad bin Tughlaq's experiments were different.

Jawaharlal Nehru presided over the historic Lahore Session (1929) where the Indian National Congress declared 'Purna Swaraj' (complete independence) as its goal. WC Bannerji was an earlier leader (early 1900s), Gandhiji was the guiding force but not president of this session, and Motilal Nehru led the Nehru Report but not this independence declaration.

Adi Shankaracharya (8th century CE) composed 'Bhaja Govindam' (also called 'Moha Mudgara') - a devotional song urging people to worship Govinda (Lord Vishnu) rather than pursuing material pleasures. Thyagaraja and Shyama Shastri were Carnatic music composers (18th-19th century), and Shad Kala Govinda Marar was a later musician.

Buddha gave his first sermon, 'Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta' (Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dharma), at Sarnath (near Varanasi) to the five ascetics who had accompanied him during his ascetic practices. Lumbini is his birthplace, Bodh Gaya is where he attained enlightenment, and Sanchi has later Buddhist stupas but not the first sermon.

Raja Bhoja (1010-1055 CE) was the most famous ruler of the Paramara dynasty, often called Pratiharas in some sources (though technically Paramaras were feudatories who became independent). He was a legendary scholar-king credited with writing on architecture, astronomy, and poetry. Rashtrakutas, Pallavas, and Palas were different dynasties from other regions.

The Satavahana dynasty (1st century BCE - 3rd century CE) predominantly minted lead coins, though they also used copper and potin. Lead was abundant in their Deccan region. Gold coins were rare ( Kushans used gold), and silver coins came later with other dynasties. This reflects their regional economic conditions and metal availability.

This famous Persian inscription is on the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) in Fatehpur Sikri, built by Akbar. The verse, composed by poet Faizi, praises the emperor's court as paradise on earth. The Taj Mahal has different inscriptions, Diwan-i-Am was for public audiences, and Buland Darwaza has victory inscriptions.

Raja Todar Mal was Akbar's finance minister and one of his 'Navratnas' (nine gems). He revolutionized revenue administration through the Zabti system (also called Todar Mal's system) based on land measurement and classification. Raja Man Singh was a general, Faiji was Akbar's brother and nobleman, and Bahadur Singh is not a prominent figure in Akbar's court.
