Our Environment

In an ecosystem, energy flows from autotrophs (producers) to heterotrophs (consumers) at various trophic levels. When organisms die, decomposers break down the organic matter and release energy back into the environment, completing the energy flow cycle.

An ecosystem requires both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components that interact with each other. Air is only an abiotic component, not a complete ecosystem. Aquariums, ponds, and deserts all contain both biotic and abiotic components functioning together.

Natural ecosystems exist without human intervention. Rivers form naturally and have self-regulating communities of organisms. Crop fields, aquariums, and gardens are all artificial (man-made) ecosystems created and maintained by humans.

In a food chain, the first trophic level consists of producers (plants). Herbivores, which eat plants, occupy the second trophic level as primary consumers. Carnivores that eat herbivores are at the third level (secondary consumers).

Omnivores consume both plant and animal matter. Herbivores eat only plants, carnivores eat only animals, and piscivores are a type of carnivore specializing in fish. Humans, bears, and pigs are examples of omnivores.

Biological magnification (biomagnification) is the process where non-biodegradable substances like pesticides and heavy metals accumulate in increasing concentrations at each trophic level, being most concentrated in top predators.
