English Verb Tenses

General truths and habitual actions use the simple present tense. The sun rising in the east is a universal fact, so "rises" is correct.

Present continuous tense is used to express the idea that something is happening now, at this very moment.

Without specific time markers, the simple present "washes" indicates a habitual action - something he does regularly. This is the most neutral choice.

Has just finished uses present perfect tense with "just" to show an action completed very recently with connection to the present. This fits the context perfectly.

The subject 'They' is plural, so we use the plural auxiliary verb 'are' with the present continuous form 'taking'. Present continuous tense is used for actions happening now or around the present time, which fits with 'today'. 'Takes' would be simple present, 'is taking' has the wrong auxiliary for a plural subject, and 'has written' is present perfect and the wrong verb.

The subject 'I' requires the auxiliary verb 'have' in present perfect tense, not 'has' which is used for third-person singular subjects. 'Have read' indicates a completed action with relevance to the present. 'Has read' would be grammatically incorrect with 'I' as the subject, while 'has been reading' would be present perfect continuous and 'reading' is not a complete verb form.

For repeated actions in the past that have relevance to the present, we use present perfect tense with 'has been'. 'He' is third-person singular, so 'has' is correct, not 'is', 'am', or 'will be'. The phrase 'many times' indicates repeated action, making present perfect the appropriate tense.

The time marker 'two years ago' indicates a specific past event, so we use simple past tense with 'was elected'. 'Has been elected' is present perfect, 'is eleced' is present tense and also contains a typo, and 'had being elected' grammatically incorrect. Passive voice with past tense auxiliary 'was' is required here.

The sequence of events requires past perfect tense for the earlier action. 'Had left' shows the train's departure occurred before 'I reached' (simple past). This is a classic case of past perfect for the earlier of two past actions. 'Is leaving' is present continuous, 'has been leaving' is present perfect continuous, and 'has left' is present perfect - all incorrect for this sequence.

The time marker 'last September' indicates a specific completed past action, requiring simple past tense 'left'. 'Leaving' is not a complete verb form, 'had left' is past perfect (used for earlier of two past actions), and 'has left' is present perfect (for past actions with present relevance). Simple past is correct here.

The narrative describes a background continuous action in the past, requiring past continuous tense 'was hunting'. This sets the scene for the main event 'there was a storm'. 'Is hunting' is present continuous, 'has been hunting' is present perfect continuous, and 'has hunted' is present perfect - all incorrect for this past narrative context.

The sentence structure 'It was clear that' indicates we need a past tense form. 'Had worked' (past perfect) shows he worked very hard before that past moment of observation. The other options are all present tense forms: 'have worked', 'are working', 'am working' - none fit with the past observation context established by 'was clear'.

We use simple present for something that is always true.

The phrase 'ever since his boyhood' indicates an action starting in the past and continuing to the present, requiring present perfect continuous 'has been reading'. This tense emphasizes the ongoing duration from past to present. The context suggests a current ongoing action, and option A 'is now trying' in present continuous tense best fits this. While the sentence alone is ambiguous without more context, 'is now trying' indicates an active current effort. 'Tried' is simple past, 'was trying' is past continuous, and 'has now been trying' would suggest longer duration. Present continuous is most likely.

The first clause needs simple present 'answers' for a habitual action, and the result clause needs 'won't write' for a future decision based on that habit. This creates a logical cause-effect relationship. Other options either don't show the habitual nature or use incorrect tenses for the future consequence.

The present perfect tense "have walked" is used to describe a completed action that has relevance to the present moment. In this context, it emphasizes that the walking was completed and the speakers are now "here" as a result. The present perfect is appropriate when the time of the action is not specified but the consequences are relevant now.

The phrase "at present" clearly indicates an action happening right now, so the present continuous tense "am attending" is the correct form. "Will attend" refers to future, "attend" is habitual present, and "will be attending" suggests a planned future continuous action.

The word "yesterday" indicates past time, and since Suresh was in the middle of running when he fell, the past continuous tense "was running" is correct. "Is running" is present tense, "has been running" connects past to present, and "has run" is present perfect - none of which fit the past context with an interrupted action.

The clause "Raju (describe) the football match" is a relative clause modifying "the way". Since the main verb "was" is in past tense, the describing action also happened in the past, so "described" (simple past) is correct. "Describe" would be present tense, "describing" would create a continuous form that doesn't fit the sentence structure, and "description" is a noun.

The sentence describes a completed request without specific time context. The simple past tense "asked" is appropriate here as it states what the minister did. "Asking" is a gerund, "was asking" would mean the minister was in the middle of asking, and "is asking" is present tense. The simple past "asked" is the most natural choice for reporting a minister's action.

In exclamatory sentences with "what", we need an adjective to modify the noun "picture". "Fascinating" is the present participle/adjective form that correctly describes the picture's quality. "Fascination" is a noun, "fascinated" would describe someone's reaction (past participle), and "fascinate" is the base verb. The adjective "fascinating" is the correct choice.
