Animal Reproduction (Class VIII)

Testes are placed in a bag-like structure called as scrotum which descends from the abdominal region.

Sex cells are also called as gametes. Gametes are the reproductive cells produced by sex organs, the gonads of the body.

It is the process of delivering a baby by mother at the end of gestation period.

An embryo takes 3 weeks to develop into a chick.

Uterus is a hollow muscular organ which has the capacity to bear a child.

In hydra, new individuals develop from buds.

A fertilised egg is called a zygote.

The fertilisation which takes place inside the female body is called internal fertilisation. Internal fertilisation occurs in many animals including humans, cows, dogs, hens, etc.

The stage of the embryo in which all the body parts are identifiable is called foetus.

Amoeba reproduces by dividing itself into two. This type of asexual reproduction is called binary fission.

Transformation of larva into an adult is known as metamorphosis.

Fragmentation involves breaking of parent organism into many fragments. Each fragment develops into an individual organism.

Animals such as hen, frog, lizard and butterfly, etc. which lay eggs are called oviparous animals.

In the first stage, a female butterfly lays eggs. The second stage is a caterpillar. A caterpillar is sometimes called larva. Larva grows into a pupa which finally forms adult butterfly.

Budding is a form of asexual reproduction in which a new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud due to cell division at one particular site. The new organism remains attached as it grows, separating from the parent organism only when it is mature, leaving behind scar tissue.
