Indian Constitution: Constituent Assembly

The Constituent Assembly, elected indirectly by provincial assemblies, was the body responsible for drafting India's Constitution. It was formed in December 1946 and first met in December 1946. Nehru and Patel were members, but the Assembly as a whole decided the constitutional framework, not individuals.

The August Offer of 1940 was the first official British proposal for a Constituent Assembly to draft India's constitution. Viceroy Linlithgow announced that after WWII, a representative body would frame India's constitution. The Cripps Mission (1942) expanded this but failed. August Offer was the first authoritative British commitment.

Mahatma Gandhi was a strong supporter of the Constituent Assembly's efforts to draft a constitution that reflected the values and aspirations of the Indian people, despite not being a member himself.

The Congress Party consistently advocated for a Constituent Assembly to draft India's constitution, seeing it as the legitimate body for constitution-making by elected representatives of the Indian people.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, which was responsible for drafting the Constitution of India. His role was pivotal in shaping the constitutional framework. K. M. Munshi and Jagjivan Ram were members but not the chairman.

The first draft of the Indian Constitution was published in October 1947, shortly after independence. This draft was then circulated to members for review and discussion. The Constituent Assembly had been formed in December 1946, but the actual drafting took several months.
