India's Constituent Assembly and Early Parliament

The Constituent Assembly was India's first legislature, formed in 1946 to draft the Constitution. It served as the country's legislative body from December 1946 until January 1950. The Assembly was not directly elected by the people but was nominated by provincial legislatures, making it indirectly elected.

The Constituent Assembly of India worked from December 1946 (first session) to November 1949 (Constitution adopted). It continued as provisional parliament until January 1950. The option '1947-1949' correctly captures the main drafting period after independence was declared.

After India gained independence in August 1947, the Constituent Assembly functioned as the provisional parliament until the Constitution came into force on January 26, 1950. It performed legislative duties during this transitional period before the first elected Parliament was formed.

The provisional parliament (Constituent Assembly) had 296 members. This number remained consistent through its tenure. After the first general elections in 1951-52, the Lok Sabha had 489 seats, which later increased to 544 through delimitation exercises.

The provisional parliament (Constituent Assembly) was NOT a directly elected body. Its members were indirectly elected by members of provincial legislatures, who were themselves elected under limited franchise. This was a key distinction from the later Parliament established under the Constitution, which is directly elected by universal adult franchise.

Ganesh Vasudeo Mavalankar (G.V. Mavalankar) was the first Speaker of the Constituent Assembly (which functioned as free India's first legislature). He later became the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha in 1952. He was a prominent Congress leader from Gujarat and was known for his expertise in parliamentary procedures.

The First Amendment to the Indian Constitution (1951) was passed by the Provisional Parliament (Constituent Assembly functioning as legislature). This was before the first general elections and the formal establishment of Parliament under the Constitution. The amendment dealt with land reform laws and freedom of speech restrictions.

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India during the provisional parliament period (1947-1950). He became Prime Minister on August 15, 1947, when India gained independence, and continued to lead the country through the Constituent Assembly period and later as Prime Minister under the constitutional framework.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel served as Deputy Prime Minister in the provisional government (1947-1952). Nehru was Prime Minister, not Deputy PM. Other options were prominent leaders but not Deputy PM.

First Lok Sabha sat from April 1952 to April 1957, a 5-year term as mandated by the Constitution. Option C correctly captures this full term. Option A is too short, B has wrong start year.

The provisional parliament had disproportionately high representation from lawyers - over 35% of members were from legal profession. This reflected the elite, educated class participating in independence movement and early governance.

India was overwhelmingly rural (85%+) in 1947-1952, and provisional parliament members were elected from rural constituencies. While some urban areas existed, rural representation dominated the legislative body.

Jawaharlal Nehru was Prime Minister from 1947-1964, including during the first Lok Sabha (1952-1957). Pant was a senior minister but not PM. Azad was also a cabinet minister, not PM.
