Environmental Pollution

Radiation hazards from nuclear sources present an existential threat due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and ability to cause genetic damage across generations. While desertification and deforestation are severe, radiation has the potential for immediate, widespread, and irreversible catastrophic harm to all life forms.

Mutations caused by radiation are often recessive, meaning they may not manifest in the immediately exposed generation. These hidden mutations can appear in future generations when two carriers reproduce, making delayed effects more harmful to later children.

Plastic is the most significant soil pollutant due to its non-biodegradable nature, massive global production, and persistence in soil for centuries. It physically alters soil structure, releases toxic chemicals, and fragments into microplastics that enter the food chain.

A pollutant is defined by its capacity to disrupt the natural equilibrium of environmental systems. This includes altering chemical compositions, physical properties, or biological relationships that maintain ecosystem stability.

Air pollution has multiple anthropogenic sources: vehicle exhaust emits nitrogen oxides and particulates, radioactive substances from nuclear activities, and smoke from burning biomass or fossil fuels. Each contributes significantly to atmospheric contamination.

 Lead is persistent in the environment and accumulates in soils and sediments through deposition from air sources, direct discharge of waste streams to water bodies, mining, and erosion.

Thermal pollution occurs when heated water from industrial cooling systems (especially power plants) is discharged into water bodies. This raises water temperatures, decreases dissolved oxygen, disrupts aquatic ecosystems, and can cause fish kills.

The greenhouse effect is primarily caused by carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, which traps infrared radiation emitted by Earth's surface and re-radiates it back, warming the planet. While water vapor contributes, CO2 from human activities is the dominant driver of enhanced greenhouse effect.

SO2 reacts with marble (calcium carbonate) to form calcium sulfate and calcium sulfite, which cause yellowing and deterioration of the Taj Mahal's surface. This phenomenon, called marble cancer, occurs due to atmospheric emissions from nearby industries.

Pollution is defined as any undesirable change in the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of air, water, or soil that harms living organisms. It's fundamentally an unfavorable alteration of the environment.

3,4-Benzpyrene (Benzo[a]pyrene) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and potent carcinogen. It's extremely harmful even at low concentrations, causing DNA damage and cancer. DDT, while toxic and persistent, is less immediately harmful than this carcinogen.

Domestic sewage contains organic matter that can be broken down by microorganisms through natural decomposition processes. Unlike polythene, alkanes, or mercury salts which are non-biodegradable and persist in the environment for long periods.

Excess minerals in groundwater can cause contamination through natural leaching or anthropogenic activities. High concentrations of minerals like arsenic, fluoride, or nitrates make water unsuitable for consumption and cause health issues.

The 1977 hepatitis epidemic in Delhi was caused by sewage contamination of water supplies. Hepatitis E virus, transmitted through the fecal-oral route, spread when sewage polluted the drinking water system.

Medak (not Medal) in Andhra Pradesh faced a severe industrial pollution hazard in 1988. Industrial effluents from pharmaceutical and chemical industries contaminated water and soil, causing health crises in the region.

Kanpur is where the Ganga becomes most polluted due to discharges from tanneries, textile industries, and sewage. The city has numerous industries releasing untreated effluents directly into the river, making it a critically polluted stretch.

The Periyar river in Kerala is heavily polluted by chemical factories, particularly in the Eloor industrial area. These factories discharge toxic effluents containing heavy metals and organic chemicals, severely degrading water quality.

Oil spills are major sources of marine pollution, creating slicks that harm marine life, damage ecosystems, and persist for years. Oil coats marine animals, prevents oxygen exchange, and introduces toxic hydrocarbons into the food chain.

CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) are released from multiple sources including refrigerators, air conditioners, fire extinguishers, and jet aircraft aerosols. All these applications historically used CFCs, which contribute to ozone layer depletion.

Nerve gas VX is a potent chemical weapon that causes atmospheric pollution and is extremely toxic to humans. It's an organophosphate that disrupts nerve impulse transmission, causing paralysis and death. Unlike phosphine (phosphene), hydrogen, or nitrogen, it's a deliberate atmospheric contaminant.

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun drives photochemical reactions in the upper atmosphere, particularly the formation and destruction of ozone. This process occurs naturally in the stratosphere where oxygen molecules are split by UV-C radiation and then recombine to form ozone (O3).

Human activities (industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, vehicle emissions, etc.) are the primary drivers of environmental pollution. While animals can contribute to localized pollution, human activities are overwhelmingly the major cause on a global scale.

A 5°C temperature rise would most immediately cause polar ice caps and glaciers to melt. While inundation of coastal towns would eventually occur, it's a secondary effect that happens after the ice melts and sea levels rise. Phytoplankton destruction and productivity changes are also longer-term ecosystem effects.

Radioactive pollution is considered the most severe because radioactive materials can remain hazardous for thousands of years, cause genetic mutations that affect future generations, and spread through air, water, and food chains. Unlike other forms of pollution which may be reversible, radioactive contamination can persist for geological timescales.
