ISA (International Standard Atmosphere) defines standard atmospheric conditions used for aviation. At sea level, the standard temperature is 15°C, which serves as the baseline reference for aircraft performance calculations and altimeter settings.

ISA standard sea level pressure is 1013.25 hPa (commonly rounded to 1013 hPa). This is the reference pressure used for altimeter calibration and all aircraft performance calculations under standard conditions.

The ISA lapse rate in the troposphere (up to 11 km) is 6.5°C per km, which converts to approximately 1.98°C per 1000 feet. This standard temperature decrease rate is used for aircraft performance calculations and flight planning.

Pressure gradient is the rate of change of pressure over horizontal distance. It's the force that drives wind from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas, making it fundamental to understanding atmospheric circulation and weather patterns.

Cumulonimbus clouds are the characteristic cloud type of thunderstorms, distinguished by their tall vertical development reaching through multiple atmospheric layers. These clouds form in unstable conditions and produce heavy rain, lightning, and sometimes hail.

Air density is determined by temperature, pressure, and altitude through the gas law. Wind is simply horizontal air movement and does not affect the intrinsic density of air molecules - it's about motion, not molecular spacing.

Altostratus clouds are mid-level clouds that typically indicate stable atmospheric conditions. Unlike convective clouds like cumulonimbus or altocumulus, altostratus clouds form in stable air and generally provide smooth flying conditions with minimal turbulence.

RVR (Runway Visual Range) observations are specifically reported and used when visibility drops below 1500 meters. This is the threshold where standard visibility observations become insufficient for safe aircraft operations during landing and takeoff.

Fog is defined by visibility reduction below 1 kilometer. During fog conditions, water droplets in the air significantly restrict horizontal visibility, often reducing it to less than 1000 meters and creating hazardous conditions for aviation and transportation.

Hoar frost forms when air temperature is below the frost point, causing water vapor to deposit directly as ice crystals on surfaces without passing through a liquid phase. This differs from rime and glaze ice which involve supercooled liquid water freezing on contact.

Thunderstorms require a steep lapse rate (rapid temperature decrease with altitude) to create strong upward air currents. This atmospheric instability allows warm air to rise rapidly, forming the tall cumulonimbus clouds essential for thunderstorm development.

Thunderstorm formation requires vertical lifting mechanisms: solar heating (thermal), orographic lifting (terrain), and frontal lifting (weather fronts). Dust storms involve horizontal particle movement but do not provide the upward air motion needed for convective storm development.

The mature stage of a thunderstorm is characterized by the simultaneous presence of both updrafts and downdrafts. Updrafts continue to fuel the storm's growth while downdrafts begin to develop as precipitation falls, creating the characteristic intense precipitation and turbulence of this stage. The formation stage has only updrafts, while the dissipating stage has primarily downdrafts.

RVR stands for Runway Visual Range, which is a critical aviation meteorological parameter that measures the distance a pilot can see down the runway from the approach end. This information is essential for determining whether aircraft can land safely during low visibility conditions such as fog, heavy rain, or snow. RVR is typically reported in meters or feet and is continuously monitored at major airports.

Impact ice forms when supercooled water droplets (liquid water below freezing temperature) strike exposed parts of an aircraft, particularly in the air intake and induction system. The droplets freeze instantly upon contact with the aircraft surface, creating a rough ice accumulation that can disrupt airflow and engine performance. This differs from rime ice (formed through rapid freezing of small droplets) and glaze ice (formed when larger droplets spread before freezing).

The dissipating stage of a thunderstorm is characterized by the dominance of downdrafts throughout the cloud structure. By this stage, the updrafts that initially fueled the storm's growth have weakened and disappeared, leaving only downdrafts that continue to bring precipitation downward. The mature stage has both updrafts and downdrafts, while the formation stage has only updrafts.

Advection fog forms when relatively warm and moist air moves horizontally (advects) over a colder surface such as cold ground, water, or snow. The cold surface cools the air from below to its dew point, causing condensation and fog formation. This differs from radiation fog (formed by ground cooling at night) and steam fog (formed when cold air moves over warm water).

Winds naturally flow from high pressure areas toward low pressure areas due to pressure gradient force. This fundamental principle of atmospheric circulation drives weather patterns and wind generation. The greater the pressure difference, the stronger the wind flow. This movement occurs as air attempts to equalize pressure differences between regions.

Winds aloft (upper atmospheric winds) are standardly measured and reported in knots for speed and true direction (not magnetic) for azimuth. True direction is measured relative to true north (geographic north pole) rather than magnetic north, which varies with location and time. This standardization allows for consistent navigation and flight planning across different regions and magnetic variations.

The Coriolis force is zero at the Equator because this apparent force results from Earth's rotation, and its magnitude depends on the sine of the latitude. At the Equator (0° latitude), sin(0°) = 0, meaning there is no Coriolis effect. The Coriolis force increases toward both poles, being maximum at the North and South poles. This is why tropical cyclones don't form at the Equator.

A squall is officially defined in aviation meteorology as a sudden, significant increase in wind speed by at least 15 knots (reaching 21 knots or more), sustained for at least 2 minutes. However, the specific threshold of 24 knots is commonly used in many operational definitions. Squalls are associated with convective weather and can pose serious hazards to aircraft during takeoff, landing, and low-altitude operations.

According to Indian climatological patterns during winter (December-February), Polar Front Jet Streams typically exhibit speeds in the 90-100 knot range. These strong upper atmospheric winds significantly impact weather patterns and aviation over the Indian subcontinent. The jet stream position and intensity during winter months influence the movement of western disturbances and affect flight planning for routes crossing northern India.

Veering refers to a clockwise change in wind direction (such as wind shifting from north to northeast to east). This is in contrast to backing, which is an anticlockwise change in wind direction. Veering winds are often associated with warm air advection and approaching warm fronts in meteorological systems. In the Northern Hemisphere, veering typically indicates changing weather conditions.

Sea smoke (also called steam fog) forms when very cold air moves over relatively warm water, causing rapid evaporation and subsequent condensation. The water vapor rising from the warm surface immediately condenses in the cold air above, creating a steam-like appearance. This is commonly observed in autumn when cold continental air moves over still-warm lakes or ocean waters.

The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere, extending from the surface to about 10-15 km altitude. This layer contains approximately 75% of the atmosphere's mass and virtually all weather phenomena including clouds, rain, storms, and temperature variations. The stratosphere above it contains the ozone layer but has minimal weather activity.
