1982 was officially designated as the Information Technology Year in India to promote computer awareness and adoption. This initiative helped accelerate computerization in Indian organizations and libraries.

Information technology as a field integrates computer technology for processing, communication technology for transmission, and reprographic/micrographic technologies for document reproduction and preservation. All these components work together for comprehensive information management.

 The word computer is derived from the Latin term 'computare' this means to calculate.

The abacus is an ancient manual calculating device dating back thousands of years, used for arithmetic operations. It predates electronic computers by centuries and represents an early form of calculation aid, not a computer generation.

Computers inherently perform information storage, retrieval, and dissemination as core data processing functions. Reference service, however, is a specialized library function requiring human expertise and personalized assistance in finding information, which computers cannot provide independently.

Natural language refers to languages that humans use for communication, such as English, Hindi, or Spanish. This contrasts with artificial or formal languages like programming languages (Python, Java) or machine language (binary), which are designed for specific computational purposes.

FORTRAN is a programming language whose name comes from 'FORmula TRANslation'. It was developed in the 1950s specifically for scientific and numerical computations. The name accurately describes its purpose - translating mathematical formulas into executable code.

High-level languages are programming languages that are more abstract and easier for humans to read and write compared to low-level languages. FORTRAN (developed in 1957) was one of the first high-level programming languages. Machine language and Assembly language are both low-level languages that work closer to the hardware. English is a natural language, not a programming language.

C is a general-purpose programming language developed at Bell Labs in the early 1970s. It's one of the most widely used and influential programming languages in history. C is not hardware (physical components) or output (results). While it's used to create software, 'C' itself is classified as a programming language.

UNIX is a multitasking, multi-user computer operating system that was developed at Bell Labs in the 1960s and 1970s. It is not hardware (physical components) or application software. It is also not a high-level programming language. The correct classification is as an operating system, though option C has a typo ('operation' should be 'operating').

COM stands for Computer Output Microform, which is a technology for recording computer output on microfilm or microfiche. This was commonly used in libraries and large organizations for long-term archival of data before digital storage became practical. The other options are either made-up or incorrect expansions of the acronym.

LSI (Large-Scale Integration) is a technology that allows thousands of transistors to be placed on a single semiconductor chip. DBMS stands for Database Management System, which is software that manages databases. It provides an interface for users to create, retrieve, update, and delete data in a systematic way. Examples include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server. The other options are incorrect expansions of the acronym.

A standard VDU (Visual Display Unit) or monitor screen typically displays 25 lines of text with 80 characters per line. This became the industry standard from early terminal designs and remains the reference for console and command-line interfaces. The accumulator is a register in the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) where intermediate arithmetic and logic results are stored. The ALU performs mathematical and logical operations, and the accumulator is central to this process. Input, output, and control units are separate components of the computer architecture.

DIALOG is a classic online information retrieval service that provides access to databases and information services. It operates as an online service where users can search and retrieve information from various databases in real-time. The term 'online service' best describes its operational model.
