Civil aviation voice communication uses VHF (Very High Frequency) band, typically in the range of 118-136 MHz for air-to-ground and ground-to-air communication. UHF is primarily used for military aviation. HF is used for long-range oceanic communication but not standard civil aviation operations.

ILS (Instrument Landing System) frequencies are in the range 108.10-111.95 MHz, but only odd frequencies are used: 108.10, 108.15, 108.30, 108.35, etc. 109.30 MHz and 111.70 MHz are valid odd frequencies. 110.80 MHz ends with .80 (even), which is not a valid ILS frequency.

ILS uses three types of marker beacons: the Outer Marker (OM) located approximately 4-7 miles from threshold, the Middle Marker (MM) about 0.5-0.8 miles out, and the Inner Marker (IM) closer to the runway (mostly for Category II/III operations). All three serve as position fixes during approach.

DME measures the slant range (direct line distance) from the aircraft to the DME ground station, not the horizontal distance over the ground. As an aircraft flies directly overhead, the DME shows the aircraft's altitude at that point. True altitude and vertical guidance are provided by other instruments like altimeters and glidepath indicators.

Airport departure control uses VHF frequencies in the range 118-137 MHz. 118.17 MHz is a valid VHF air traffic control frequency. 109.11 MHz would be used for ILS or navigation aids, and 225 MHz is in the UHF range typically used for military operations.

In ILS marker beacon indicator lights, the Middle Marker is represented by amber (yellow-orange) color. The Outer Marker indicator is blue, and the Inner Marker indicator is white (if installed). These visual cues in the cockpit help pilots identify which marker they are crossing during approach.

ILS (Instrument Landing System) provides precision approach guidance during landing. It's most essential when visibility is low, as it allows pilots to approach the runway safely even when they can't see it clearly. The system provides both lateral (left/right) and vertical (up/down) guidance through radio signals.

VOR is a radio navigation system that aircraft use to determine their position and navigate between points. It operates on VHF (Very High Frequency) and provides 360-degree radial signals from the station. VOR stations are fundamental components of airway navigation infrastructure.

In a standard 2-bar VASI system, white-on-white means you're significantly above the glide slope. You need to descend to get back on the proper approach path. If you saw red-on-white, you'd be on the glide slope. Red-on-red means you're too low and need to climb.

Marker beacons use different audio and light signals to indicate position along the approach path. The Outer marker has continuous dashes at 400 Hz, the Middle marker has alternating dots and dashes at 1300 Hz, and the Inner marker has continuous dots at 3000 Hz. The middle marker indicates you're approaching the decision height for Category I ILS approaches.

Red-on-red means you're below the glide slope and need to climb to get back on the proper descent path. VASI lights use color to signal your position: white-on-white (too high), red-on-white (on glide slope), and red-on-red (too low). You're dangerously low if you see all red lights.

ILS categories are defined by their decision height and runway visual range requirements. CAT-II allows approaches down to 100 feet decision height with RVR of 1200 feet. CAT-I requires 200 feet DH, CAT-III has even lower or no decision height limits depending on the subcategory. The 'not less than' means 100 feet is the minimum authorized DH.

VOR receivers in the cockpit allow pilots to navigate by determining their position relative to VOR ground stations. The instrument shows which radial from the station you're on, allowing you to track to or from stations, fly specific airways, and determine position through VOR/DME fixes. VOR is a navigation aid, not for communication, altitude, or lighting control.

CAT III-C represents the highest level of ILS capability, with no decision height limitation and no runway visual range requirement. It allows for 'zero-zero' landings in essentially zero visibility conditions. CAT III-A has DH < 100 feet and RVR >= 700 feet, CAT III-B has DH < 50 feet and RVR >= 150 feet, while CAT III-C has no DH or RVR minimums.

MLS (Microwave Landing System) is a precision landing system that was developed to replace ILS. It operates in the microwave frequency band and provides similar guidance capabilities. MLS offers advantages like more flexible approach paths and reduced susceptibility to interference, though ILS remains the more widely deployed system.

Mode C transponders automatically transmit pressure altitude information to air traffic control radar systems. This allows ATC to see both your position and your altitude on their displays. Mode A transponders only transmit a 4-digit code, while Mode S transponders provide even more detailed information. Altitude encoding is the key feature that distinguishes Mode C from basic Mode A.

ILS uses the VHF frequency band from 108.10 to 111.95 MHz for localizer signals, which provide lateral guidance during approach. The glideslope operates separately in the UHF band around 329-335 MHz. Options B and C represent other aviation frequency ranges (VHF airband and FM broadcast respectively).

ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) is designed to receive signals from NDBs (Non-directional Beacons), which are low-frequency radio beacons that transmit omnidirectional signals. The ADF needle points toward the NDB station, allowing pilots to track to or from the beacon. NDBs operate in the 190-1750 kHz range, distinct from ILS components.

GPS uses satellite triangulation and time-of-arrival calculations, not gyroscope principles. The Turn and Slip indicator and Heading Indicator both use gyroscopes - the former uses a rate gyro to detect turn rate, while the latter uses a directional gyro to maintain heading reference. Gyroscopic instruments rely on the principle of rigidity in space and precession.

TCAS (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System) is specifically designed to prevent mid-air collisions by interrogating transponders of nearby aircraft and providing vertical guidance to avoid conflicts. AWR is airborne weather radar, GPS is for navigation, and HSI is a cockpit display combining navigation information. TCAS is the only collision avoidance system listed.

Using the formula c = f × λ where c is the speed of light (300,000 km/s), f is frequency in Hz, and λ is wavelength in km. For λ = 1.5 km: f = 300,000 / 1.5 = 200,000 Hz = 200 kHz. This is a standard frequency-wavelength conversion problem in radio communications.

UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band spans from 300 MHz to 3000 MHz (3 GHz) as defined by international radio frequency allocations. Option B describes a broader range that includes VHF, while options C and D are incorrect ranges. UHF is used for various applications including aviation communication, television broadcasting, and mobile phones.
