ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was designed by Robert Kahn along with Vinton Cerf. Kahn is often credited as the primary designer of ARPANET's architecture, and both Kahn and Cerf later developed the TCP/IP protocols that became the foundation of the modern Internet.

A Kilobyte (KB) contains 1024 bytes, not 1000 as might be expected. This is because computers use binary (base-2) systems, and 2^10 = 1024. This binary prefix system is fundamental to how digital storage and memory are measured.

The ThinkPad 700C was indeed developed by IBM and released in 1992. It was one of the first modern laptops with a TrackPoint pointing device (the red nipple in the middle of the keyboard). IBM later sold its PC division to Lenovo in 2005, but ThinkPad continues under Lenovo.

Linux was created by Linus Torvalds in 1991 as a hobby project while he was a student at University of Helsinki in Finland. He released it as open-source, and it has since become the kernel for numerous operating systems, including Android and most web servers.

The Analytical Engine was designed by Charles Babbage in the 1830s-1860s. Though never built in his lifetime, it was the first proposed mechanical general-purpose computer. Ada Lovelace wrote algorithms for it, making her the first programmer. Babbage is called the 'father of the computer'.

ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was developed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946. It was the first general-purpose electronic digital computer, weighing 30 tons and containing 18,000 vacuum tubes.

Charles Babbage is widely regarded as the 'father of the computer' for his design of the Analytical Engine (1837) and Difference Engine (1822) - the first mechanical general-purpose computers. Though his machines were never fully built in his lifetime, his concepts established the fundamental architecture of modern computers.

John Bardeen, along with William Shockley and Walter Brattain, invented the transistor at Bell Labs in 1947. This invention revolutionized electronics by replacing bulky vacuum tubes with tiny, reliable solid-state devices. Transistors became the fundamental building blocks of modern computers, allowing for miniaturization and exponential growth in computing power.

Intel Corporation developed the Pentium microprocessor family, which became the most widely used CPU architecture in personal computers during the 1990s and early 2000s. The Pentium brand represented Intel's flagship x86 processor line and dominated the PC market for over a decade. AMD was Intel's main competitor in the processor market, while IBM and Dell were computer manufacturers that used processors from Intel and AMD.

Motorola developed the 6800 (1974), 68000 (1979), and 68040 (1990) microprocessors, which were part of their legendary 68000 family. These processors powered many workstations, early Macintosh computers (before the PowerPC transition), and embedded systems. The 68000 architecture was known for its clean design and orthogonal instruction set, making it popular with programmers and used in systems like the Sega Genesis and Atari ST.

Tim Berners-Lee invented HTML (HyperText Markup Language) in 1989-1990 while working at CERN, and this invention directly led to the creation of the World Wide Web. HTML provides the structural foundation for web pages, allowing documents to be linked through hyperlinks. Berners-Ley also created the first web browser and web server, establishing the fundamental protocols that power the modern internet.

IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a six-game match in May 1997, marking the first time a computer beat a reigning world champion in a standard match. Deep Blue could evaluate 200 million chess positions per second using specialized hardware and software. This victory demonstrated the potential of brute-force computing combined with sophisticated evaluation functions in complex strategic domains.

Machine language (or machine code) is the native binary language that computers directly execute - it consists of 1s and 0s that the CPU interprets as instructions. All other programming languages must ultimately be translated or compiled into machine language before the computer can understand and execute them. Assembly language uses mnemonics to represent machine instructions, while high-level programming languages are more human-readable but require compilers or interpreters.

WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is a technical standard for accessing information over mobile wireless networks like 2G/3G cellular networks. It enabled mobile phones to access simplified web content and services before modern smartphones, though it was limited by slow speeds and basic displays. WAP created a foundation for mobile internet access, leading to today's sophisticated mobile web browsing capabilities.

MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer-3) is the international standard format for compressed digital audio, developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. MP3 compression reduces audio file size by about 90% while maintaining reasonable quality, making it practical to store and transmit music digitally. This format revolutionized music distribution, enabling digital music players, online music stores, and streaming services.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) introduced the LaserJet laser printer in 1984, which became the industry standard for office laser printers. The LaserJet used laser technology and toner to produce high-quality text and graphics, offering superior print quality and faster speeds compared to dot-matrix or inkjet printers. HP's LaserJet line dominated the laser printer market for decades, establishing HP as a leader in printing technology.

Optical fiber cables use light (typically from lasers or LEDs) as the carrier of information, transmitted through glass or plastic fibers by total internal reflection. Light signals travel at near-light speed through these fibers, enabling enormous bandwidth over long distances with minimal signal loss. This technology revolutionized telecommunications, enabling high-speed internet, cable TV, and global communications infrastructure.

The first successful mouse-driven computer with graphical user interface was Macintosh built by Apple.

LISP (LISt Processing) was developed by John McCarthy in 1958 specifically for artificial intelligence research and remains influential in AI to this day. LISP's unique features - symbolic computation, recursive functions, and list-based data structures - made it ideal for early AI applications like natural language processing and theorem proving. Many modern AI concepts have roots in LISP, and it heavily influenced later AI languages like Prolog and Python.

Steve Jobs co-founded Apple Computer Company (now Apple Inc.) in 1976 along with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Jobs provided the business vision and marketing expertise that transformed Apple from a garage startup into one of the world's most valuable companies. While Jobs co-founded Apple, he is often singularly credited in popular accounts for the company's founding, though Wozniak designed the early Apple computers.

Jack Kilby invented the first integrated circuit (IC) in 1958 at Texas Instruments, combining multiple electronic components onto a single semiconductor chip. This invention revolutionized electronics by dramatically reducing circuit size while increasing reliability and performance. Kilby was awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics for this breakthrough.

Konrad Zuse built the Z1 in 1938 in his parents' living room in Berlin, Germany. It was the first binary digital computer, using binary arithmetic and floating-point numbers. Zuse's work was groundbreaking as it preceded other early computing machines, though it was mechanical rather than electronic.

Analog computers represent and manipulate data as physical quantities that vary continuously, such as voltage, mechanical position, or fluid flow. They differ from digital computers which use discrete binary values. Examples include slide rules, mechanical differential analyzers, and early process control systems.

IBM's first electronic computer was the IBM 701, also known as the Defense Calculator, announced in 1952 and released in 1953. It was IBM's first production computer and used vacuum tubes. ENIAC was built by the University of Pennsylvania, not IBM. Deep Blue came much later in the 1990s.
