GK (Indian Education)

The National Literacy Mission Authority (NLMA) was indeed launched on May 5, 1988, by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. This mission aimed to impart functional literacy to non-literates in the age group of 15-35 years.

NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) is the apex organization concerned with the qualitative development of school education in India. It develops curriculum, textbooks, and provides academic support for school education.

The National Policy on Education (NPE) was adopted by Parliament in 1986 under the Prime Ministership of Rajiv Gandhi. This policy was a landmark document that provided the framework for educational development in India.

UGC (University Grants Commission) is the statutory body concerned with the promotion and coordination of university education in India. It was established to oversee funding, academic standards, and development of universities.

Navodaya Vidyalayas (Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas) were established as part of the National Policy on Education 1986 to provide free quality education to talented rural children. These are residential schools that aim to bring quality education to rural areas.

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla is the institution that conducts advanced research in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences at the national level. It was established in 1964 and is an autonomous institution.

The mid-day meal scheme was formally launched as a centrally sponsored scheme during the 8th Five Year Plan (1992-1997). However, it had been operational in some states since the 1980s, including Tamil Nadu where it was introduced by K. Kamaraj in the 1960s.

Operation Blackboard was launched in 1987-88 as a scheme to improve the quality of elementary education in India. It aimed to provide essential facilities like classrooms, teachers, and teaching-learning materials to primary schools.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) was set up in 1953 following the recommendations of the University Education Commission (1948-49) chaired by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. It became a statutory body in 1956 through an Act of Parliament.

IGNOU was established in 1985 when the Parliament passed the IGNOU Act. It was created to democratize higher education by reaching remote areas and promoting distance learning. The other dates (1982, 1986, 1990) do not correspond to IGNOU's establishment.

The Calcutta University Commission (1917-1919), also known as the Sadler Commission, first recommended the 10+2+3 educational structure. The Universities of Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay were established in 1857 following the Wood's Despatch of 1854. This marked the beginning of modern university education in India. The year 1857 preceded all other options by several decades.

K.M. Munshi founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1938 as an educational trust dedicated to promoting Indian culture, values, and heritage. Dr. Radhakrishnan was associated with different educational institutions, and Bhatnagar was a scientist. Annie Besant worked in different areas of education.

NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) assists and advises the Ministry of Education on policies and programs, particularly in school education. CBSE conducts exams, UGC regulates universities, and ICSE is a school examination board. NCERT's mandate is specifically advisory and research-oriented.

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) was formed in 1995 as a statutory body to regulate teacher education programs. It received statutory status under the NCTE Act of 1993, but was fully constituted and operational from 1995. The other years are incorrect.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded Aligarh Muslim University (originally Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College) in 1875 to promote modern education among Muslims. Abdul Kalam Azad and Annie Besant contributed to education in different ways. Sir Syed's vision was specifically to bridge the gap between traditional and modern education.

The National Open School (NOS) was set up in 1989 as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education. It pioneered open schooling in India, providing flexible education opportunities. NOS was later renamed as National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). The other years are incorrect.

SNDT University (now SNDT Women's University) was the first women's university in India, established in 1916 in Mumbai. It was founded by Dhondo Keshav Karve with the mission of women's education and empowerment. Calcutta and Shanti Niketan were co-educational institutions.

In India, the Governor of a State serves as the Chancellor of State Universities. This is a constitutional convention where the Governor acts as the nominal head of universities in the state. The Chief Minister, Chief Justice, and President do not hold this position for state universities.

CBSE established the first Open School in India in 1979 to promote distance education. This initiative was part of making education more accessible to students who couldn't attend regular schools.

IGNOU launched Gyandarshan in 2000 as its educational TV channel to broadcast educational programs for distance learners. The name combines 'Gyan' (knowledge) and 'Darshan' (view/vision)

There are only two Kendriya Vidyalayas located outside India - one in Kathmandu (Nepal) and the other in Moscow (Russia). These serve the children of Indian embassy and diplomatic staff posted abroad.
