An interregnum is specifically the period between the end of one monarch's reign and the accession of the next. During this time, there may be a temporary government or regent in place. A regent is a person who rules temporarily, episcopacy refers to church government by bishops, and stratocracy is government by military forces.

A crosier is the ceremonial staff carried by bishops and abbots as a symbol of their pastoral office. It typically has a curved top resembling a shepherd's crook, representing the bishop's role as a shepherd of their flock. A lectern is a reading stand, diocese is a district under bishop's control, and autonomy means self-rule.

 The spouse of a ruling monarch is known as a consort.

A sexton is a church officer with responsibility for maintaining the church building and grounds, ringing bells, and sometimes digging graves. An aisle is a walkway, verger is an official who performs ceremonial duties, and vestry is a room in a church used for meetings and changing into robes.
