The Vijayanagara Empire suffered a catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Talikota (also called Rakshasi-Tangadi) in January 1565 when the Deccan Sultanates (Bijapur, Ahmadnagar, Bidar, Golconda, and Bidar) allied against it. The defeat led to the sacking of Hampi and the eventual fragmentation of the empire into smaller principalities.

Vishnuvardhana was a prominent ruler of the Hoysala dynasty (c. 1108-1142 CE), known for military campaigns and temple-building. The Chalukyas were his overlords early in his reign, Pallavas were earlier and based in Tamil Nadu, and Mauryas were a much earlier ancient empire (3rd century BCE).

Konganivaram (or Konganahalli) is associated with the Ganga dynasty, who ruled parts of Karnataka. The Gangas were contemporaries and sometimes rivals of the Cholas. Cholas were based in Tamil Nadu, Pallavas were earlier Tamil rulers, and Chalukyas ruled from a different region of Karnataka.

Hyder Ali seized power in Mysore in 1761 after overthrowing the local Hindu ruler. He established a strong administration and became the de facto ruler, though he initially operated under a puppet Hindu king. His rise marked the beginning of Mysore's emergence as a major military power in southern India.

The Treaty of Masulipatam (1766) was signed between the British East India Company and the Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah II. Under this treaty, the Nizam accepted British ascendancy and provided military support in exchange for protection against other powers. This agreement was a significant step in British expansion in southern India.

Ludhiana was founded in 1480 by the Lodi dynasty rulers, who established it as a strategic outpost on the trade routes between Delhi and Lahore. The city was named after the Lodi founder, and it served as an important administrative and military center during their rule.

This work presented his interpretation of the Gita as a call for political action and resistance against British rule, deeply influencing the Indian nationalist movement.

Zahir-ud-Din Muhammad Babur was the founder of the Mughal Empire. He was a descendant of Timur and Genghis Khan, and he invaded India in 1526, defeating Ibrahim Lodi at the First Battle of Panipat. 'Babur' means 'tiger' in Persian, and he established the Mughal dynasty that ruled India for over three centuries.

Ramchandra Panduranga was the real name of Tantia Tope, one of the most prominent leaders of the 1857 Indian Rebellion against British rule. He was a close associate of Nana Saheb and a brilliant military strategist who continued guerrilla warfare against the British even after the fall of major rebel strongholds. He was eventually captured and executed in 1859.

Asaf-ud-Dawlah, the Nawab of Oudh (Awadh), shifted his capital from Faizabad to Lucknow in 1775. This move was driven by Lucknow's strategic location and better defensive position. Under his rule, Lucknow became a magnificent city known for its patronage of arts, architecture, and culture, earning it the title 'Constantinople of India'.

The Satavahana dynasty ruled in the Deccan region from around 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. Simuka was the founder, Krishna was a prominent ruler, and multiple rulers bore the title 'Satakarni'. Vijayasena, however, was not a Satavahana ruler but a ruler of the Sena dynasty in Bengal (12th century CE), making him the correct answer to this question.

Cochin (Kochi) was the site of the first European settlement in India, established by the Portuguese in 1500 after Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India. Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived with a fleet and established a factory there. This marked the beginning of European colonial presence in India, with Cochin becoming the first Portuguese stronghold.

Dadabhai Naoroji was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Central Finsbury in 1892, becoming the first Asian British MP. He was a prominent Indian nationalist leader, economist, and founder of the Indian National Congress. His election was significant as it gave India a voice in the British Parliament and helped expose the economic exploitation of India under British rule through his 'drain theory'.

The Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow was built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784 and was explicitly modeled after the Sublime Porte (Bab-i-Humayun) in Istanbul. This 60-foot high gateway served as the entrance to the Bara Imambara complex and represents the Awadhi architectural style that drew heavily from Ottoman influences.

Agra served as the primary capital for three great Mughal emperors: Akbar (who made it his capital in 1556 and built the Agra Fort), Jahangir (who ruled from Agra), and Shah Jahan (who was born in Agra and later commissioned the Taj Mahal there). The city remained the Mughal capital until Shah Jahan shifted it to Delhi in 1648.

Ludhiana was founded in 1480 by the Lodi dynasty rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. It was established as a military camp and trading post on the banks of the Sutlej River. The city's name derives from 'Lodi' (the dynasty) and 'ana' (camp or habitation). Sikandar Lodi was the specific ruler under whose reign Ludhiana was established.

Nizam-ul-Mulk (also known as Asaf Jah I) founded the Asaf Jahi dynasty in Hyderabad in 1724 after declaring independence from the Mughal Empire. He was originally appointed as the Viceroy of the Deccan by Aurangzeb but established autonomous rule following Mughal decline. His descendants ruled as Nizams of Hyderabad until 1948, making it one of India's wealthiest and most long-lasting princely states.

Pushyamitra Shunga, a Brahmin general in the Mauryan army, assassinated the last Mauryan emperor Brihadratha in around 185 BCE and founded the Shunga dynasty. This marked the end of the Mauryan Empire and the beginning of Shunga rule, which lasted until approximately 73 BCE. Pushyamitra was a patron of Brahmanism and performed two horse sacrifice rituals (Ashvamedha).

The Charminar was built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty (also known as the Golconda Sultanate). He commissioned the monument to commemorate the end of a plague epidemic that had devastated Hyderabad. The four minarets (Char = four, Minar = minarets) represent the four Khalifs (Caliphs) of Islam and stand as a symbol of Hyderabad's architectural heritage.

Qutb-ud-din Aibak founded the Slave Dynasty (also known as the Mamluk Dynasty) in 1206 after the death of his master Muhammad Ghori. He was a slave of Turkic origin who rose to become a general and then the first Sultan of Delhi. The Slave Dynasty (1206-1290) was the first of the five dynasties that constituted the Delhi Sultanate, and it ruled northern India for nearly a century.

The Tashkent Agreement was signed in January 1966 between India and Pakistan to end the 1965 Indo-Pak war. It was mediated by the Soviet Union and signed by Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pakistani President Ayub Khan in Tashkent (now in Uzbekistan). Tragically, Shastri died hours after signing the agreement. The agreement mandated withdrawal of troops to pre-war positions and restoration of diplomatic relations.

The Portuguese renamed Gharapuri Island as 'Elephanta' in the 16th century after discovering a large stone elephant statue near the shore. The original name 'Gharapuri' means 'Fortress City' or 'City of Caves' in Marathi. The island is famous for its rock-cut Elephanta Caves containing Hindu and Buddhist sculptures, including the magnificent 20-foot high three-headed Shiva statue (Trimurti), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Saka Era began in 78 AD and is associated with the Kushan emperor Kanishka (or his predecessor Vima Kadphises). While the era was named after the Shakas (Scythians) who had invaded northwestern India earlier, it was Kanishka who formally adopted this calendar system for official inscriptions and coinage. The Saka Era is still used today as the official calendar of India (Saka Samvat) and is the basis for the Indian National Calendar.
