Babar (also spelled Babur) was the founder and first emperor of the Mughal dynasty in India. He established the Mughal Empire in 1526 after defeating Ibrahim Lodi at the First Battle of Panipat. Akbar, Humayun, and Jahangir were all later emperors who came after Babar.

His reign is known for religious tolerance, administrative reforms, and territorial expansion. The other rulers' names have different meanings - Babar means "lion/tiger" and Humayun means "fortunate."

Akbar abolished the Jizyah tax in 1564, just 8 years after ascending the throne. This was part of his broader policy of religious tolerance and reconciliation with his Hindu subjects. The abolition removed a major source of religious discrimination and helped integrate Hindus into the Mughal administrative framework, contributing to political stability.

The Mughals claimed descent from both the Mongol warriors (through Genghis Khan's lineage from his mother's side) and Timur (Tamerlane) from their father's side. Babar was a descendant of Timur on his father's side and Genghis Khan on his mother's side. This dual lineage was a source of great pride for the Mughals and was used to legitimize their rule.

Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658) moved the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi in 1648, founding the city of Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi). This included building the Red Fort (Lal Qila) and the Jama Masjid. The move reflected Delhi's historical importance as a capital and its strategic central location. The other emperors ruled primarily from Agra or Lahore.

Akbar (r. 1556-1605) pioneered the policy of Sulh-i-Kul (peace with all), which promoted reconciliation and assimilation of Hindus into the Mughal system. This included abolishing the Jizyah tax, permitting Hindu temple construction, engaging in interfaith dialogue, and incorporating Hindus into administration and military. This policy created relative harmony and strengthened the empire.

Akbar's tomb at Sikandra near Agra was commissioned by his son Jahangir and features a distinctive 5-tiered pyramidal structure. It's an important Mughal architectural masterpiece built during Jahangir's reign.

The Mughal Empire primarily ruled Northern India, centered around the Delhi-Agra region (the Indo-Gangetic plain). While they temporarily expanded into other regions at various times, Northern India remained their core territory and power base throughout the dynasty's history.
